Spokesperson of the Embassy in Japan Answers to Journalists' Questions on the Negative Trends of Japan's Yasukuni Shrine
Q: On August 15th, the anniversary of Japan's defeat, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida paid tribute to the Yasukuni Shrine. Some cabinet members and members of the National Assembly went to pay their respects. What is China's comment on this?
Answer: Today is the 78th anniversary of Japan's unconditional surrender and defeat. We should always remember this historic moment when justice triumphs over evil. The Yasukuni Shrine is a spiritual tool and important symbol for Japanese militarism to launch aggressive wars against foreign countries. The essence of the Yasukuni Shrine issue is whether the Japanese government can correctly understand and treat the past period of aggression history. The negative trend of the Japanese side once again proves that there is always a counter current of denying aggression crimes in Japan. China expresses strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to this and has made solemn representations to the Japanese side. We strongly urge the Japanese side to truly face and deeply reflect on the history of aggression, abide by the statements and commitments made on historical issues, and win trust from neighboring Asia and the international community through practical actions.
