Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao lodged a solemn protest with the Japanese government over the launch of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea by Japan
On August 24th, Ambassador to Japan Wu Jianghao lodged a solemn protest against Japan's initiation of the discharge of contaminated Fukushima nuclear water into the sea with Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Masaki Okano.
Wu Jianghao stated that today, despite strong doubts and opposition from both domestic and international sources, Japan has shifted the risk of nuclear pollution to neighboring countries including China and the international community, prioritizing its own interests over the long-term well-being of people in the region and around the world, and taking the global marine environment and human health as a dangerous gamble. China firmly opposes this and once again strongly protests against Japan, demanding that it immediately cease this extremely selfish and irresponsible behavior.
Wu Jianghao pointed out that the Fukushima nuclear accident is one of the most serious nuclear accidents in the world to date, causing a large amount of radioactive material leakage. There is no precedent internationally for using discharge methods, and there is a lack of scientifically and practically validated and proven "safe and harmless" discharge technologies. The Japanese side insists on forcibly initiating sea discharge without fully demonstrating the long-term safety and reliability of existing sea discharge technologies, obtaining broad understanding from all stakeholders, and establishing a complete international supervision and accountability compensation mechanism, which carries huge risks and unpredictable hazards. Looking back at human history, the painful lessons of ecological disasters caused by human decision-making errors are everywhere, and we cannot let similar tragedies happen again.
Wu Jianghao emphasized that the ocean is the blue homeland on which all humanity relies for survival, and all countries have an international legal obligation to protect and preserve the marine environment. The Japanese side has no right to decide to dump nuclear contaminated water into the ocean without authorization and must bear full responsibility for the consequences arising from it. The Japanese discharge has sparked strong concerns among Chinese consumers about food safety. The Chinese government has always adhered to the principle of putting the people first and must resolutely respond to their concerns, safeguarding the marine environment, food safety, and public health.
Wu Jianghao stated that China strongly urges Japan to immediately stop discharging into the sea, communicate honestly with neighboring countries with a responsible attitude, accept strict supervision from the international community, and effectively adopt scientific, safe, and transparent methods to dispose of nuclear contaminated water. If the Japanese insist on doing so, they will bear long-term moral and legal responsibilities.
Wu Jianghao pointed out that it is natural and completely necessary for the Chinese government to announce a comprehensive suspension of imports of aquatic products originating from Japan. The responsibility for causing this situation lies entirely with the Japanese side, and they should reflect on themselves.
