The American Dream is dead!, [Perspective] American salaried class: Rising cost of living website | USA | Cost
Recently, the website of Newsweek published an article by American woman Ruby Nicole Day titled "For us working class, the American Dream is dead.".
Ruby Nicole Day, 41 years old, is a driver at DoorDash, a food delivery company.
In her article, she stated that one of the strangest things for American working class is listening to politicians talk about the "American Dream," and everyone I know knows the truth: "The American Dream is dead," at least for us.
Of course, everyone defines the "American Dream" in their own way. For some people, it could be a big house, a luxury car, a country club membership, and a wardrobe full of designer clothes. But what most of us want is much simpler.
For me, the "American Dream" is to have my own house, so that I don't have to worry about being evicted by the landlord. I have enough money to pay for water, electricity and Internet for the children who receive education at home. I have a car, so that I can drive to work and save a little money to prevent the car from breaking down. So far, I haven't realized this, although it's not because I haven't tried. I have three jobs, and if someone asks me to work overtime, I will agree. But the monthly bill is still higher than my income. I think a lot about why this is the case, and the conclusion is that I don't have a real chance.
Ruby Nicole Day said, who wouldn't agree that every American should have the same opportunity? However, for those of us living at the bottom, this is not just a dream, but also a fantasy. If you grew up in a low-income family like me in the 1980s, you wouldn't have the opportunity to go to college and earn a degree. 40 years later, this means that the job you are engaged in will not be able to enjoy the benefits offered by jobs with a demand for diplomas. At the same time, the cost of living has increased, but wages have remained unchanged. Many people, like me, can only work in a low paying, job with no way out. The American Dream has turned into an American nightmare.
The American Dream is more difficult to achieve than ever before, especially with rising costs of living in 2023. People living in poverty or low income are at a disadvantage. This kind of gap will only widen, it's hard to imagine that we can still achieve the American Dream.
Ruby Nicole Day's article has resonated with American netizens. Netizen Henry D said that the exploitative economic model always brings pain to many people. A few upper class people live well, while they scoff at the poor and the working class. In the eyes of the wealthy and privileged, the vast majority of the people are inferior.
Netizen Jamal Brown said that Biden Economics is a farce and a complete failure. The employment figures are the worst in over 50 years. Real wages are decreasing, and inflation rates are rising due to the crazy spending of Democrats. The US credit rating has declined and banks have gone bankrupt.
