The 1500 year old world heritage city of Gongshan was destroyed, and 39 cultural relics in South Korea were destroyed by rainstorm rainstorm | culture | history
The continuous heavy rainstorm in South Korea not only caused casualties, but also a large number of cultural and historical sites.
According to South Korean media News and Newsis News Agency, the floods caused by the heavy rainstorm have brought serious disasters to Zhongqing Nanbei Road and Qingshang Beidao Road, and the historic buildings, relics and cultural relics left over from ancient times are also hard to escape the floods. Among them, Gongzhou City, south of Zhongqing, suffered the most. The 1500 year old city wall and stone tablet of Gongshan City were damaged by rainstorm, and the royal mausoleum also suffered soil erosion due to rainstorm erosion.
Earth and rock erosion of Gongshan City wall
According to the latest data from the Korean Cultural Heritage Agency on the 17th, 39 national cultural heritage items were destroyed from June 23 to July 16 due to the impact of rainstorm and mountain torrents, including 1 treasure, 19 historical sites, 5 natural monuments, 3 places of interest, and 5 national folk cultural treasures.
Gongshan City, located in Gongzhou City, Chungcheongnam do, has a history of 1500 years and is registered by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage Site of Baekje. It was the capital of Baekje during the Three Kingdoms period of Korea from 475 to 538. Gongshan Castle was originally a earthen city, and later expanded into a stone city. It was also a military fortress during the Silla, Goryeo, and Korean eras.
The rainstorm led to the loss of earth and stone on the city wall of Gongshan City, and the building "Banghe Tower" built on the city wall was wiped out by the flood of the river until the water level receded. The earth rock and rubble at the lower end of the pavilion "Jinxi Tower" at the other end of the city wall were also washed away by the rainstorm, and many nearby stone tablets were washed down, so the staff quickly covered them with waterproof cloth.

Sibi, the capital at the end of Baekje, was also damaged by rainstorm, and the No. 2 tomb of the ancient tomb group on the west side of the Fuyu King Cemetery, where many king tombs were gathered, lost earth and stone. The excavation site of the "Shizhuangli Ruins" at the Paleolithic site in Gongzhou City, Chungcheongnam do, was also submerged in floods. The Shizhuangli Museum has been banned from entering and exiting, and the cultural relics collected in the museum have been urgently moved to a safe area.
The earth and stone loss of the drainage channel of the "first gate closing" of the cultural relics in North Qingshang Road, and the earth walls of some buildings in Hehui Village, Andong City, North Qingshang Road, were destroyed by rainstorm.
