China News Service, Taipei, June 10th: Taiwanese Dragon Boat Festival rice dumplings are fragrant
"My mother's meat rice dumplings are, in my opinion, the best in the world. These rice dumplings are made from carefully selected ingredients and thoroughly cooked, and they are cooked thoroughly. They are truly unparalleled." June 10th is the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. , Taiwanese gourmet Zhu Zhenfan, who is nearly 70 years old, recalled with emotion when being interviewed by a reporter from China News Service.
The Dragon Boat Festival is here, and the rice dumplings are fragrant. In the past, many Taiwanese families, like Zhu Zhenfan's family, made rice dumplings by hand: washing the glutinous rice, preparing fillings, wrapping rice dumpling leaves, and boiling or steaming rice dumplings. This process is not only the inheritance of skills, but also an emotional exchange.
According to Zhu Zhenfan, there are many types of rice dumplings in Taiwan, including Huzhou rice dumplings introduced from Huzhou, Zhejiang, Minnan rice dumplings introduced from Tongan and Quanzhou, Fujian, and steamed meat rice dumplings introduced from Chaozhou, Shantou, Guangdong and other places. There are meat-wrapped rice dumplings and sweet rice rice dumplings. Currently, the most popular ones are boiled meat rice dumplings, known as "Southern Rice Dumplings" and steamed meat rice dumplings, known as "Northern Rice Dumplings". In addition, alkaline rice dumplings are also popular, and many people like to taste them when the weather is hot.

Zhu Zhenfan's mother is from Chiayi, Taiwan, and his father is from Jiangsu. Every Dragon Boat Festival, in addition to eating rice dumplings containing fine pork belly, mushrooms and other ingredients, he and his family will also "set eggs" together and replace the eggs with salted duck eggs. "My father once lived in Gaoyou, Jiangsu Province. I heard that during the Dragon Boat Festival, the salted duck eggs with the strongest yang energy will stand up. We have also played with it, but it seems that the probability of my success is not high." He said with a smile.
With the changes of the times, many families in Taiwan no longer make rice dumplings by themselves, and people choose to buy them at the market. Zhu Zhenfan’s memory of the last time he made rice dumplings at home was before his sister took the college entrance examination. In order to help her sister "go to high school in one fell swoop", my mother made rice dumplings for the last time.

However, Taiwanese society still values the emotional expression of the Dragon Boat Festival. In late May, about 70 people, including volunteers from the Taiwan Tzu Chi Charity Foundation, worked together to make more than 13,000 rice dumplings in three days. The proceeds from people's purchases of rice dumplings were used for the follow-up relief work after the Hualien earthquake. The foundation stated that it hopes to convey care and warmth and make the meaning of the Dragon Boat Festival more profound.
The rice dumplings are full of fragrance and full of goodwill. Ms. Lin bought rice dumplings at an event held by the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation. She said that it was very rare for an event like this on the eve of the Dragon Boat Festival to not only let her feel the festive atmosphere, but also to contribute to Hualien's disaster relief.
Starting from May 18, volunteers from the Taiwan Tzu Chi Charity Foundation worked together to make more than 13,000 rice dumplings in three days. The proceeds from people’s purchases of rice dumplings were used for the follow-up relief work of the Hualien earthquake.
In the festive atmosphere, Taiwanese people also express their best wishes by giving each other rice dumplings. China News Service reporters recently saw in Taipei, Changhua and other places that there are many kinds of rice dumplings on the market. In addition to the boiled meat rice dumplings, steamed meat rice dumplings, and alkaline rice dumplings sold in traditional markets, many merchants have launched various new types of rice dumplings, including Ice cream-flavored "ice rice dumplings" and various fruit-flavored rice dumplings are added with cultural creativity in the hope of attracting more young people to buy them.
"Young people will like more varieties, but we also stick to the traditional taste." Mr. Chen, who runs a rice dumpling shop in Taipei, said that the customers who often come to the shop to buy rice dumplings are mainly older people, but the Dragon Boat Festival There will be a wave of purchasing peaks around the holidays, and customers will also become more diverse.
“Everyone eats rice dumplings on a daily basis, but they will definitely eat them during the Dragon Boat Festival.” Mr. Chen said that by eating and sending rice dumplings, you experience a festive atmosphere and a cultural inheritance.
Zhu Zhenfan understands this better. He recalled attending a gathering of social elites in the 1970s, where he not only ate rice dumplings, but also ate many foods mentioned in "Chu Ci", which was an eye-opener. "The atmosphere of the festival was very strong at that time, but it has faded a bit now," he said. "I still hope that traditional culture can be better inherited and preserved."
