According to comprehensive reports, the NATO Vilnius Summit is approaching. On the 9th local time, President Erdogan of Türkiye and President Biden of the United States talked by phone about Sweden's NATO membership and other issues.
According to Reuters, Erdogan told Biden that Sweden had taken action in the right direction to obtain Türkiye's approval for its accession to NATO, but he said that these actions had no effect because PKK supporters were still holding demonstrations in Sweden.
The White House stated in a statement that Biden "expressed a desire to welcome Sweden to join NATO as soon as possible.".
At present, Sweden's application for NATO membership has not yet received the support of NATO member countries Türkiye and Hungary.
Türkiye has repeatedly urged Sweden to take more effective measures in combating terrorism, and Sweden has repeatedly affirmed that it has met the requirements agreed in the negotiations with Türkiye, including the proposal of a new anti-terrorism law. But Erdogan has not yet indicated that he will give Sweden a green light.
According to Tass, Biden and Erdogan also discussed bilateral relations, Ukraine's accession to NATO, the Black Sea Food Agreement, and the delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Türkiye.
