Sweden's accession to the treaty is blocked again! Hungary Delays Approval of Application for Voting in Hungarian Parliament | NATO | Sweden
Due to the absence of the Hungarian ruling party, the Hungarian parliament was unable to vote on the proposal to approve Sweden's accession to NATO at a special meeting held on July 31, resulting in Sweden's application to join NATO being further postponed.
According to the news website "Hungarian Daily News" and Bloomberg, after Türkiye's President Erdogan said in July that he supported Sweden's accession to NATO, the Hungarian opposition party launched this special meeting in the country's parliament. The proposal was supported by members of the Hungarian Socialist Party, the Democratic Alliance, the Green Party LMP Party and other parties, as well as an independent member of parliament. The Green Party LMP calls on the Hungarian parliament to approve Sweden's accession to NATO as soon as possible, believing that "peace in Hungary is guaranteed by NATO.".
However, according to reports, the special meeting ended in recess as members of the ruling party, who hold a two-thirds majority in parliament, were unable to attend, and the Hungarian parliament did not vote on approving Sweden's proposal to join NATO.
Not long ago, Hungarian Prime Minister Guyash Guergay told reporters that parliament may approve Sweden's accession to NATO in the autumn.
In May 2022, Sweden and Finland simultaneously applied to join NATO. In April 2023, Finland officially joined NATO as its 31st official member state. According to regulations, all NATO member states must unanimously agree in order to officially approve Sweden's accession to NATO.
At present, Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has changed his attitude and expressed support for Sweden's accession to NATO, but Sweden's application still needs the approval of Türkiye's parliament and Hungary's parliament. In addition, the Hungarian Prime Minister Orban's government said that once Türkiye's approval, the country's parliament will approve Sweden's application to join NATO. Bloomberg said that the Hungarian side did not clearly explain why its ratification process was "linked" with Türkiye's timetable.
