Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Sweden: The number of nuclear weapons available globally is constantly increasing | Security | Global
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute in Sweden released its annual assessment report on the state of arms, disarmament, and international security on the 12th. The report shows that the number of available nuclear weapons worldwide is constantly increasing. As of January this year, there are approximately 12500 nuclear warheads worldwide, of which over 9500 are in a usable state; About 2000 nuclear warheads are on high alert, mainly from the United States and Russia.
The report shows that as of January this year, the United States has a total of 5244 active and retired nuclear warheads, of which about 3708 are used by the US armed forces, including about 1770 deployed nuclear warheads and about 1536 retired warheads waiting to be dismantled.
In addition, although data shows that the UK did not increase its nuclear weapon count in 2022, the UK government announced in 2021 that it would increase the number of nuclear warheads from 225 to 260, and later stated that it would no longer publicly disclose the number of its nuclear weapons, deployed warheads, and missiles. It is expected that the number of nuclear warheads in the UK will continue to increase in the future.
