Recently, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated that a 15 minute three-year action plan will be launched nationwide to facilitate the construction of a convenient living circle, allowing for the orderly and standardized return of "minor repairs" such as shoe repair and key matching to people's lives. At the same time, multiple cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Lanzhou have also clearly and orderly set up stalls and allowed commercial displays.
With the development of economy and urban planning, many minor repairs and commercial displays are gradually fading out of people's sight. After the orderly opening up, vendors can bring convenience to the surrounding people at a lower cost, and people also look forward to the return of urban fireworks.
"There is such a convenient stall nearby."
"Hello, please help me pierce an eye." On the afternoon of June 29th, a customer came to Feng Dengxin's booth and wanted to pierce an extra hole in the shoulder strap of their backpack to adjust its length. Feng Dengxin stood up and skillfully took out tools such as punching and punching tools. In less than two minutes, he quickly tied them up. The customer paid 1 yuan by scanning the code. Seeing the reporter's interview, he smiled and said to the reporter, "Master Feng is very versatile. There is such a convenient stall around him."
Since 1993, Feng Dengxin came from his hometown of Xinxiang, Henan to Beijing to set up a stall for shoe repair. He has set up stalls in many places such as Jiuxianqiao, Lishuiqiao, Ping'anli, and Xinjiekou. Due to road planning, urban appearance, and other reasons, there has always been no fixed booth, and he always runs back and forth with a toolbox.
Later, on the recommendation of a friend, he found a stall near the east gate of Rending Lake Park and settled down. Repairing shoes, repairing cars, matching keys, unlocking, sharpening knives, repairing small household appliances... Feng Dengxin wrote on a whiteboard at the back of the booth about the services he could provide before the 11th project, and also left a phone number for on-site service.
On the evening of June 25th at 7 o'clock, the Donglang Cultural and Creative Park Night Market in Tongzhou District, Beijing was bustling with crowds of people. Various types of stalls, including snacks, flowers, accessories, handicrafts, and loops, gathered together, making it very lively. "The weather has cooled down a bit at night, so let's go to the night market with friends and do some shopping," a consumer told reporters.
The summer in Beijing is full of vitality, with distinctive markets such as "Lishuiqiao Night Market", "Quick Flash Night Market", "Sunset Market", and "Shenghuatun Night Market" scattered throughout various districts of Beijing, most of which are located near subway entrances, attracting many citizens to come and check in.
"At first, the booth was free, but recently it has started to charge and is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday." A vendor in Donglang Cultural and Creative Park told reporters that he has many idle figurines in his hand. He heard that it is very lively here, so he simply bought a table, a table mat, and a desk lamp to set up the stall. It sold for 700 yuan in just two days.
Retain old craftsmanship
"My dad does this, and my brother and I have been learning from him since we were young. When we were 16 years old, we went out to set up a shoe repair shop to support our families." Before coming to Beijing, Feng Dengxin had already set up a shoe repair shop in his hometown of Xinxiang, Henan for three years. Under the persuasion of his friends, Feng Dengxin came to Beijing, where there was more traffic, to seek business.
"Nowadays, the quality of shoes is good and they are rarely worn out. It's not expensive to buy a new pair if they are broken," Feng Dengxin told reporters. There are fewer people repairing shoes now, and in recent years, he has mainly relied on services such as matching keys, repairing cars, and unlocking to maintain his income.
Walk 2 kilometers northwest from Feng Dengxin's booth, and Guo Shuxuan's repair shop has also been open for 18 years. At first, I only rented a newspaper booth near the Drum Tower in Beijing, selling newspapers and magazines, providing public telephone services, and paying phone bills. With the popularization of smartphones, people's ways of obtaining information have become more diversified, and the business of Guo Shuxuan's newspaper kiosk has gradually declined.
In order to survive in Beijing, Guo Shuxuan picked up some of the car repair and key matching skills he had learned from his teacher Fu in a factory when he was young. Later in Beijing, he also learned how to repair shoes. "As long as you study hard, it's not difficult to learn. There are many things that need to be pondered over by yourself." Guo Shuxuan said, "Although this is a niche craft, as you get older, you can't do anything else and can ensure basic living expenses."
"Hello, can you see if this sole can still be repaired?" Just as the previous customer sat down with the key, another lady came to inquire about repairing the shoes. After careful examination, Feng Dengxin said it can still be repaired and costs 80 yuan. The customer expressed a special liking for this pair of shoes and heard that there is a booth here that wants to repair it first.
"Customers often come from far away, and sometimes they have to push a broken car all the way over." Feng Dengxin and Guo Shuxuan have both encountered customers who have been searching for repair shops from a distance because they cannot find them nearby. After hearing about the new policy, Guo Shuxuan also hopes to arrange stalls in a reasonable and orderly manner, truly facilitating the lives of residents. Feng Dengxin hopes to stay in his old place, as it has already accumulated a lot of customers.
Attracting more young people to start businesses
Slice tomatoes, shred onions, mix meat fillings, and beat meat balls... Before setting out at the stall in the evening, Hu Yue and her friends need to spend 4 hours at home preparing the side dishes in advance.
Hamburger preforms are fried and grilled with butter, beef balls are pressed into cakes, covered with a slice of cheese, and a little self fried caramel onion is added. The melted cheese is melted. After a friend is responsible for frying and grilling, Hu Yue puts several prepared side dishes next to them to assemble. Setting up a stall has been going on for almost two months, and Hu Yue and her friends have already cooperated very well.
"Today, a customer who lives far away came to buy back 6 hamburgers and said they wanted to give them to a friend. They were very happy to be recognized. At 11:30 pm on June 28th, Hu Yue, who had just returned home from the stall with his friend, shared this joy with the reporter.". After returning home, they quickly cleaned the electric grill and various containers, organized the ingredients, and calculated the accounts for the day. It was already late at night.
At the end of last year, Hu Yue and her friends resigned from the company. Later, they learned through their friends that many urban areas in Beijing have successively launched market stalls, and the market attitude is very open. Hu Yue, who already had a catering dream, decided to take this opportunity to give it a try.
After visiting and researching, Hu Yue rented a stall in the vegetable market near Lishuiqiao to sell beef burgers. "Nowadays, many cities have opened up stalls in an orderly manner, which is quite friendly to us. There are more stalls to choose from, so you don't have to worry about paying fines or confiscating tools," Hu Yue told reporters. After a few days of trial operation, Hu Yue felt that the customer flow was still good, so she rented a booth with friends for a monthly fee of 3000 yuan, with additional electricity costs.
Fixed stalls have some limitations in terms of crowd exposure, and Hu Yue also uses online platforms to post short videos showcasing the production process, ingredient processing, and other visuals, which have also attracted many new customers from a long distance. Summer has arrived, and she expressed that she and her friends will continue to develop new products and strive to increase order volume.
