Spokesperson of the Russian Foreign Ministry: US politicians can drink Fukushima nuclear contaminated water and support Tokyo
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zakharova stated on the 30th that US politicians can demonstrate their support for Japan's actions by drinking contaminated water discharged into the ocean from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.
On the 24th of this month, despite strong opposition from the international community, Japan began discharging the contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.
Zakharova pointed out at a press conference on the 30th that the scientific dimension of Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea should be analyzed based on existing laws and applicable scientific indicators. That is why the Russian side calls on the Japanese side to demonstrate maximum transparency on this sensitive issue. As for the attitude of the United States on the issue of Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea, it is entirely a manipulation of political interests.
She stated that the Japanese side claimed that the water discharged from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was safe to drink, but she refused to do so for some reason. Since those American politicians are confident in the safety of Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharged into the sea, they can drink this water as a sign of support.
Zakharova previously stated that the Russian side is closely monitoring the development of the situation and hopes that the Japanese government will provide all necessary information to relevant countries, including support for collecting environmental samples at emission sites. She pointed out that the operation of the company to which the nuclear power plant belongs has been found multiple times to be inconsistent with the information provided.
On the 28th, Sergeyanko, a researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences, told the media that the Japanese government has refused Russia's request to send research ships to study the contaminated water at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. He said that after the Fukushima nuclear accident, Russia conducted research work and organized several scientific exploration activities, but Japan restricted Russia from entering its exclusive economic zone. Therefore, the Russian side conducted research at a distance of 150 to 300 kilometers from Fukushima, resulting in limited information obtained, and the Japanese side did not provide any data to the Russian side.
The Russian Consumer Rights Protection and Public Welfare Supervision Bureau stated on the 24th that, in view of Japan's previously announced plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, Russia has strengthened supervision of seafood originating from Japan since July 8th. The agency pointed out that all types of food exported by Japan to Russia must provide relevant certificates that meet the requirements.
The Russian Bureau of Animal and Plant Inspection and Quarantine recently announced that the department is strengthening the detection of radioactive substances in fish and seafood imported from Japan. Once found to exceed the standard, restrictions will be imposed on their supply.
Kistanov, Director of the Japan Research Center at the Institute of China and Modern Asia at the Russian Academy of Sciences, stated that initiating the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant would seriously damage Japan's image.
