Recently, the Guangdong Provincial Health Commission reported two general level public health emergencies. Among them, Fengshun in Meizhou reported one case of poisoning caused by ingestion of self collected herbal medicine mixed with hooked kiss, with 2 cases of onset and 1 case of death.
When it comes to hookkiss, most people may not be aware of it. But its other name is very familiar: Heartbreaking Grass.
Gou Jian, also known as Duan Chang Cao or Da Cha Yao, is commonly found in grass or shrubs near villages, roadsides, mountain slopes. It grows in a vine like manner and has a well-developed root system, often intertwined and coexisting with other surrounding plants. The shape of its flowers and rhizomes is very similar to some commonly used medicinal herbs such as "Five Fingered Peach", "Gold and Silver Flower", and "Golden Lock Spoon".
The entire plant is highly toxic, and those who ingest it can experience mild difficulty breathing, and severe cases can be fatal. The clinical manifestations of hooked kiss poisoning are mainly neurological symptoms, including respiratory paralysis, dizziness, speech ambiguity, muscle relaxation and weakness, diplopia, decreased vision, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea and abdominal pain, foaming at the mouth, nausea and vomiting, etc.
Similar poisoning incidents have occurred multiple times
The poisoning incidents caused by accidental ingestion of self collected herbs mixed with hooked kisses have occurred multiple times.
In 2021, a family and friends gathered in Qujiang District, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province to drink homemade herbal herbal herbal tea, resulting in a case of sepsis. The incident resulted in 5 people being sent to the First People's Hospital of Shaoguan City for rescue due to sepsis.
After inspection, it was found that they mistakenly ingested the broken intestine herb with a shape resembling honeysuckle, and were subsequently poisoned and admitted to the hospital.
Earlier, a similar incident occurred in Shenzhen where a family of six were all poisoned. At that time, Mr. Chen specially entrusted someone to bring back some fresh medicinal herbs from his hometown and cooked a pot of Qinggan Mingmu soup for his grandparents and grandchildren.
At night, people who have consumed herbal soup gradually experience symptoms such as dizziness, blurred vision, nausea, and vomiting, and those who drink the most soup experience the most severe symptoms. At this point, they realize that the soup may be toxic and seek medical attention promptly.
The doctor collected the remaining herbal soup and the patient's urine and sent them to the laboratory for testing. Soon, it was confirmed that the herbal soup contained Gou Xi, also known as Duan Chang Cao.

Broken intestine grass is mainly distributed in Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places, growing in hills, sparse forests or shrubs. The whole plant of Heartbreaking Grass is highly toxic and must not be consumed.

Why is Heartbreaking Grass so poisonous? Because its roots, stems, and leaves all contain toxic "hookworm alkaloids", which are a type of neurotoxicity that can cause respiratory distress for those who accidentally consume them, and can be fatal in severe cases. 5-8 leaves can "topple" an adult.
After accidental ingestion, a person may experience symptoms such as respiratory paralysis, dizziness, unclear speech, muscle relaxation and weakness, diplopia, decreased vision, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, diarrhea and abdominal pain, foaming at the mouth, nausea and vomiting.
The incubation period of poisoning caused by broken intestine grass is very short, and some people may experience symptoms immediately after taking it by mistake. But generally, it takes about 2 hours after ingestion to develop the disease.
What should I do after mistakenly eating Heartbreaking Grass?
1. Quickly induce vomiting
This is the most commonly used self rescue method for food poisoning and should be carried out immediately. But if the poisoned person becomes unconscious, it is not advisable to artificially induce vomiting, otherwise it can easily cause suffocation.
2. Go to the hospital immediately
After poisoning, do not take so-called "antidotes" without authorization to avoid delaying treatment and endangering life. You should be rushed to the hospital for treatment. If the situation is critical, call 120 for emergency treatment.
3. Keep leftover food
The remaining herbs that have been consumed should be retained for testing to identify the cause of poisoning. After someone is poisoned, anyone who has consumed the same herbal medicine should immediately go to the hospital for examination regardless of whether they have contracted the disease.
