As August approaches, with the overall tight balance between electricity supply and demand during the peak summer season nationwide, pumped storage, as a green, low-carbon, clean, and flexible regulating power source in the power system, plays an increasingly prominent role in ensuring energy and electricity supply. Recently, seven pumped storage power stations in the five southern provinces and regions generated 50.43 million kilowatt hours of electricity per day, breaking the 50 million kilowatt hour mark for the first time in history.

At the Yangjiang Pumped Storage Power Station in Guangdong, China's three 400 MW pumped storage units with the largest operating capacity are facing the first peak summer "test" after the full anniversary of safe operation. The power station starts and stops an average of 9 times a day, operates at full load for more than 9 hours, pumps 7.45 million kWh of electricity, generates 6.17 million kWh of electricity, and has a comprehensive utilization rate of nearly 83%, which is better than similar international units.
At the Yangjiang Pumped Storage Power Station in Guangdong, China's three 400 MW pumped storage units with the largest operating capacity are facing the first peak summer "test" after the full anniversary of safe operation.
Similarly, the Meizhou Pumped Storage Power Station, which broke the record for the shortest construction period of China's pumped storage main project, also underwent the "big exam" for the first time.
Since April, the cumulative power generation of the power station has exceeded 500 million kilowatt hours, with over 1600 unit starts and over 5200 operating hours. The average daily number of starts has reached 13. The frequent start stop of the unit poses a huge test on the performance of the switch. The No. 4 unit of the power station has installed China's first domestically produced complete set of pumped storage unit switches. Since its commissioning, it has been operated safely more than 1100 times and has received the highest level of technical appraisal from the China Machinery Industry Federation, which is "internationally leading in comprehensive performance indicators, capable of mass production and widespread application in pumped storage power stations.".

Since the beginning of this year, 7 pumped storage power stations in the five southern provinces and regions have played a prominent role in peak shaving. Taking Guangdong as an example, the power station operated for a total of 59318 hours, an increase of about 30% year-on-year. The number of startups was 17441, a year-on-year increase of about 25%, generating 6.4 billion kilowatt hours of electricity, a year-on-year increase of about 46%.
From "territorial decentralization" to "remote centralization", control efficiency increases by 2 to 3 times
In early July, China's first pumped storage multi station centralized control center was officially put into operation, achieving remote centralized control of 31 pumped storage units in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area. Based on mature Internet of Things technology, this centralized control center has multiple intelligent functions such as agile identification of equipment information, convenient operation and error prevention of equipment, and replacement of duty duty machines.

At 8:00 pm on July 28th, the load of Guangdong power grid suddenly increased and the system frequency decreased. Six units of a pumped storage power station started emergency response. "Based on past experience, the pressure of peak power generation at pumped storage power stations in August has increased without decreasing. By remotely centralized control of all pumped storage units, control efficiency can be improved by 2 to 3 times and dispatch needs can be quickly responded to." Zhu Haifeng, General Manager of the Biotechnology Department of the Operation Company of Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Company, introduced.
In July of this year, Nanwang Energy Storage Company basically achieved comprehensive emergency duty management for six pumped storage power stations in Guangdong region, with "7 × 24 hours". The operation personnel are responsible for all daily emergency and routine fault handling, greatly improving emergency efficiency.
Replacing manual inspection with "data inspection" and empowering equipment maintenance with computing power
In April this year, China's first large-scale pumped storage artificial intelligence data analysis platform was put into use in Guangzhou. By collecting real-time data from over 300000 device status measurement points, maintenance personnel can stay at home and grasp the health status of the unit in real time. Based on massive multi-dimensional data, accurate equipment status evaluation conclusions are generated. Southern Power Grid Energy Storage Company predicts equipment defect hazards in advance, combines equipment data analysis with maintenance strategy formulation, and helps achieve the transformation from maintenance experience decision-making to data decision-making.

During the peak summer season, the artificial intelligence analysis platform achieved over 90% replacement of manual inspection machines through data inspection, detecting more than 30 potential equipment defects in advance and effectively avoiding accidents. At the same time, various machine learning models become experienced "engineers" by analyzing and learning production big data, capable of accurately calculating complex problems such as equipment heating, vibration, and heat dissipation, with an accuracy rate of over 95%. Taking Shenzhen pumped storage power station as an example, there are up to 140 inspection algorithms that can complete massive data inspections, make status diagnoses, and automatically generate reports in one second.
