Wang Feng, Chief of Staff of the Mobile Third Brigade of the Beijing Armed Police Force, led 40 assault team members on foot to the Luopo Ridge Station. They passed through a flooded tunnel and stepped on muddy mud. On the afternoon of August 1st, they delivered the first batch of rescue supplies.

At Luopo Ridge, Wang Feng received a special gift - a bottle of Fengyoujing.

A student walked up to him and said, "Uncle Armed Police, thank you very much. I really have nothing else to give. I just want to express my gratitude to you for saving our lives."

How did this assault team urgently advance on foot all the way to the Luopo Ridge? What dangerous moments have you experienced? 01 Departure

Carrying a 50 pound backpack and hiking for 12 kilometers

On July 31st, more than 40 armed police soldiers, including Wang Feng, formed an assault team, most of whom were born in the 2000s. The assault team departed from Sanjiadian Railway Station in Mentougou and planned to travel 5 kilometers by car, followed by a 12 kilometer hike into Luopo Ridge.

Recalling the formation of this team, Wang Feng said that at that time, all the soldiers had volunteered and signed up. The final selection of this team is based on three criteria: Party members are selected first, and those with backbone and good water quality are given priority.

At around 18:00 that day, when heavy rain poured down, this assault team embarked on the road of rescue. The soldiers carried hand bags and rescue supplies weighing up to 50 pounds, carrying water, bread, instant noodles, and ham sausages. Although each soldier carried a large amount of supplies, they only provided water and small bread along the way.

Wang Feng said, "I told them that they can eat when they lack physical strength, but everyone didn't drink an extra sip of water or eat an extra bite of food. These supplies were all intended for the trapped people."

The hiking section is piled up with debris such as rolling stones, mud, and trees, the railway tracks are buried by landslides, and the tunnel has accumulated water tens of centimeters deep. The most difficult thing to walk on is the suspended railway track, which is several tens of meters long. The roadbed below has been washed away, and from the gaps in the railway track, you can see the mudslides formed by landslides.

The soldiers trekked all the way, with blood blisters on their feet, but were reluctant to use medical supplies and bottled water. They wanted to leave the supplies to trapped passengers and villagers.

As a commander, Wang Feng has been walking ahead all the way. He must first face unknown road conditions, analyze and judge the mountains and collapsed sections: "The railway line is full of mountains soaked in water, and any carelessness will be buried by landslides and mudslides."

Recalling the scene at that time, Wang Feng also felt a sense of fear in the future. "At that time, the danger was no longer a concern, and we must have completed the task. At the same time, we were also prepared not to come back."

On the same day, due to railway damage, the rescue team temporarily changed their plan and carried out rescue operations in Shuiyuzui Village, Miaofengshan Town. After transferring 5 trapped villagers to a safe area, the armed police officers and soldiers returned to Sanjiadian Station in Mentougou for rest. The next morning, they went to the front line of rescue again.

02 Arrived

The last kilometer only took less than 10 minutes

On August 1st, after a 4-hour hike, 40 commandos from the Beijing Armed Police Force arrived at the Luopo Ridge Station on foot.

Wang Feng recalled that in the last kilometer, the soldiers accelerated and sprinted for less than 10 minutes. "Although physically tired, mentally excited, there is a spiritual force supporting oneself."

Before entering the Luopo Ridge community, Wang Feng also had concerns. He was worried that in the absence of water and food, the arrival of supplies would cause panic and competition. But in reality, passengers and villagers were orderly and spontaneously welcomed the armed police officers and soldiers along the way.

Wang Feng immediately told the trapped passengers that "the information of K396 train has been transmitted through satellite phone.". He also promised everyone that he would definitely be able to eat and drink enough water, not a single one would fall behind.

After he finished speaking, many people choked up and said, "My heart is finally at ease," and some children saluted them.

Here, Wang Feng and the armed police officers and soldiers saw the selfless assistance provided by the villagers of Luopo Ridge to the trapped passengers. "I am very touched. It is still very difficult to accommodate so many people in a community, but the villagers have all extended a helping hand to the stranded passengers."

A passenger handed a note, hoping that the armed police officers and soldiers could help contact their families in the event of a power outage. Wang Feng said, "We made contact numbers on every piece of paper. The look of help from everyone made me feel that my mission lies."

03 Evacuation

Transport a soldier and a passenger overnight

That night, 500 armed police soldiers arrived with food, clothing, and medicine for reinforcements.

Due to the risk of landslides and mudslides occurring at any time, the armed police officers and soldiers decided to escort the first batch of K396 passengers to the downhill area overnight after testing the night evacuation road conditions. The soldiers take one passenger with them and adopt a shoulder to shoulder approach towards children and elderly people who cannot walk.

Wang Feng said that during the night evacuation, considering the psychological state of passengers, especially children, "there is no visible scene of collapse on both sides at night, which can to some extent avoid causing panic. If children see the disaster, they will be afraid and walking will be even more dangerous."

It took over 4 hours from departure to safe arrival at the pick-up train. At around 8 o'clock on August 2nd, the first batch of over 300 passengers of K396 finally arrived safely at Beijing Fengtai Station.

After arranging the passengers of the K396 train, Wang Feng led the assault team towards the direction of the Z180 train. At that time, Wang Feng and the soldiers had not slept well for four days and three nights. On the early morning of August 3rd, Wang Feng made a phone call to his wife to report safety after his phone received signal.

Up to now, Wang Feng is still in charge of dredging work in Mentougou. He said, "I have been on the front line of disaster relief, trying to block the flood in front of me and protect the people behind me."
