Russia vetoed!
On August 30th local time, Russia vetoed a draft United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at extending sanctions against Mali.
In the afternoon of that day, the Security Council voted on two draft resolutions regarding the extension of sanctions against Mali. The draft resolution jointly drafted by France and the United Arab Emirates received support from 13 Security Council members, but Russia voted against it. The Security Council subsequently voted on a draft resolution proposed by Russia, which did not receive the required number of affirmative votes for adoption.
The draft resolution of the Security Council must obtain at least 9 votes in favor and all 5 permanent members must not oppose each other in order to be passed.
In September 2017, the Security Council unanimously passed a resolution to impose travel bans and asset freezes on individuals and entities that undermine the peace process in Mali. Since then, the Security Council has repeatedly approved the extension of sanctions measures.
