Russia claims that the United States is expanding its military presence in Syria Intelligence | Syria | United States
Russian President's Special Envoy for Syria, Alexander Lavrentiev, said on the 22nd that Russian intelligence shows that the United States is strengthening its military deployment in Syria.
Lavrentiev said in an interview with Russian satellite news agency that the United States is expanding its military presence at the Tanv military base in northeastern and southern Syria, possibly in an attempt to further destabilize Syria.
Türkiye's Anadolu News Agency reported on the 13th of this month, citing anonymous sources, that the United States is sending reinforcements to its military bases in Syria.
The United States, without the permission of the Syrian government, has approximately 900 troops stationed in the northeast and south of Syria under the pretext of assisting Kurdish armed forces in combating the extremist organization ISIS and protecting oil fields. The northeast of Syria is the main oil and gas producing area of the country. The Tanfu military base located in southern Syria is close to the border between Iraq and Jordan.
According to the Associated Press, there are currently an undisclosed number of US military contractors in Syria. The US special forces also frequently enter and exit Syria, but their numbers are not included in the permanent forces.
The Syrian government accuses the US military of violating Syrian sovereignty, illegally occupying Syrian territory, frequently stealing Syrian oil, and seizing food.
