China has made significant progress in the development of voluntary blood donation, ranking among the top in the world in various aspects
CCTV News: Today is the 20th World Blood Donor Day. The relevant person in charge of the National Health Commission recently stated that since the promulgation and implementation of the Blood Donation Law of the People's Republic of China in 1998, China has made significant progress in the development of voluntary blood donation. The Global Blood Safety Report released by the World Health Organization shows that China ranks among the top in terms of total voluntary blood donation, blood safety level, and rational clinical blood use.
The relevant person in charge of the National Health Commission stated that China's voluntary blood donation work has formed a pattern of "government led, departmental cooperation, social support, and public participation". The voluntary blood donation system has been fully established, and the blood management system and normative standard system are constantly improving. A blood collection and supply service system has been established nationwide, covering both horizontal and vertical aspects. A total of 453 blood stations have been built nationwide, forming a blood station service system with provincial-level blood centers as the leader, prefecture level central blood stations as the main body, and central blood banks as supplements. The level of blood safety assurance in our country has significantly improved. The number of voluntary blood donors and the amount of blood donated nationwide have achieved continuous growth for over 20 years. The blood donation rate per thousand people has increased from 4.8 in 1998 to 11.5 in 2022. In 2022, the total amount of blood donated was 27.6 million units, with an average annual growth rate of 14.5%. In 2022, the number of blood donors exceeded 16 million, with an average annual growth rate of 16.3%. From January to May this year, the number and volume of blood donors increased by 7.7% and 6% compared to the same period last year.
Guo Yanhong, Director of the Medical Emergency Department of the National Health Commission: The emergency support capacity of blood has been further improved. In order to strengthen our blood emergency support capabilities, we have established a nationwide blood emergency support linkage mechanism. Once a sudden event occurs, or when there is a temporary, transient, local, or atypical blood tension in certain regions, we immediately initiate inter regional blood transfer to meet the clinical blood needs.
