Russian President Putin delivered a speech on August 22nd, Russian Flag Day, stating that Russia's long-standing flag and symbols reflect the continuity of its national development and must be respected by all citizens, public groups, and state officials.
According to TASS, Putin said in a video speech on Flag Day on August 22nd, "All historical flags and symbols of Russia deserve respect from citizens, social activists, and government representatives because they reflect the continuity of our nation and national development. Our flag, like our country, has a history of thousands of years."
The "historical flag" referred to by Putin includes the flag of the Soviet Union and the flag of the Russian Empire. Putin said that in the past, the Russian military printed the image of Jesus on the raised flag; In the 19th century, the black, yellow, and white national flags of the Russian Empire were flying on government buildings; In the 20th century, Russian people lived under the red flag of the Soviet Union for over 70 years. "It is under this banner that the great Patriotic War has won," Putin said.
However, Putin also stated that the Russian people definitely have special feelings for the white, blue, and red national flags, "This is our official flag, formulated by Peter the Great."
According to a previous report by Perspective Russia, the recognized father of the tricolor flag was Peter the Great. On January 31, 1705, he issued an order stating that white, blue, and red flags should be hung on any trading vessel. He also personally designed blueprints and determined the order of the three horizontal bars.
TASS reported that on August 22, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic passed a resolution to designate the historical flag of Russia as the flag of the Russian Federation. In 1993, sky blue was replaced by blue, and bright red was replaced by red. In 1994, then Russian President Yeltsin ordered the establishment of Flag Day.
