This movie tells the story of a depressed and unsuccessful programmer, a model eager to stand out, who, due to seemingly favorable job opportunities, decides to go out and explore gold, but unexpectedly gets involved in a carefully planned online scam.

Similar scenarios and methods have led many people to connect with the recently hotly discussed cases in northern Myanmar, and have also drawn more attention to the ongoing transnational criminal activities such as online fraud, gambling traps, recruitment and abduction, as well as the situation where many Chinese people are deceived and subjected to inhumane treatment overseas.

Xiao Wang from Xianju County, Taizhou City, is currently 20 years old. At the end of last year, he was deceived into going abroad in northern Myanmar in pursuit of a "high paying job". From then on, he began to experience a purgatory like oppression and torture. "I thought I didn't have a chance to leave alive!" Fortunately, after several months of persistence, as well as the relentless pursuit of his family and police in China, he finally rescued Xiao Wang from the "sea of hardship".

The disillusionment of beautiful fantasies

"High paying jobs turned out to be telecommunications fraud"

In November 2022, Xiao Wang, who lives in the Xianju urban area, met a "new friend" in a game. During a chat, the other person expressed that he was currently working as a "headhunter" and had some good jobs that cost over ten thousand yuan per month and needed to find suitable candidates. Upon hearing about the high salary, Xiao Wang immediately became interested. The other party told Xiao Wang that the job responsibilities are also very easy, just make phone calls and click on the phone every day, and the work location is in northern Myanmar.

At that time, Xiao Wang was not satisfied with his original job and had a dream of becoming rich. He was determined to find a better job. Upon hearing that there was still such a good job, coupled with the other party's promise to pay for transportation and living expenses, he didn't think much and agreed to it.

Subsequently, the other party gave Xiao Wang an instruction, indicating that as long as Xiao Wang followed the instructions all the way to the workplace, someone would be there to pick him up.

Following the guidance of his friend, Xiao Wang went alone to the border of Guangxi and found a place called "Safe House". According to the "friend"'s suggestion, let Xiao Wang stay in the "safe house" for a few days first.

According to Xiao Wang's description afterwards, the so-called "safe house" is a small shed made of wooden boards, piled with hay on top. The height is very short, about less than one meter, and after entering, people can only sit or lie on the wooden board or hunch their waist.

At that time, Xiao Wang didn't realize that he was staying here for a period of time to observe if there were any other relatives or friends who came together or to find him. After it was confirmed that Xiao Wang came alone, the "friend" gave him a phone number and asked him to contact a contact person. "Snake Head" took him off a highway gap in Guangxi and climbed over the mountain. Little Wang, who had just arrived, had no idea that he had crossed the Chinese border and arrived in Myanmar by crossing the mountain.

Just as he crossed the border, he encountered a group of ferocious locals. Xiao Wang was also confiscated of his personal belongings such as his phone and ID card, and his personal freedom was restricted. After arriving at the "company", the manager told him directly that they were engaged in telecommunications fraud and took him to visit the office area, where many people were busy making phone calls and chatting, mainly targeting foreigners and overseas Chinese.

The fraud process mainly involves chatting and interacting with foreigners or overseas Chinese, and after a period of time, encouraging them to invest. The money is transferred to the account of the fraud company through the link they send. These fraud companies have mature fraud methods and processes, and as "newcomers", they will be guided and trained by "old employees".

Upon learning that the high paying job recommended by his friend was to engage in telecommunications fraud, Xiao Wang expressed his unwillingness to engage in such illegal and criminal work. The staff of the fraud company finally revealed their true face when they saw Xiao Wang offer a toast, refuse to eat, and receive a fine.

They locked up the disobedient Xiao Wang in the dungeon. There are a total of 6 rooms in the dungeon, each with 10 people locked in. After communication, Xiao Wang learned that some of the people who are locked here are unwilling to engage in telecommunications fraud work, some need to "reflect on themselves" because they haven't cheated money for a long time, or have been locked in for making mistakes.

During his imprisonment, people would come to ask Xiao Wang every once in a while if he had "figured it out" and if he was willing to "join". At first, the staff in the fraud company were quite polite, constantly issuing empty promises to lure Xiao Wang. Several times, seeing Xiao Wang being "uninterested", persuasion and drawing pancakes became verbal threats. But Xiao Wang still refused to join the scam.

After multiple negotiations without success, the staff completely lost patience and began to resort to violence against Xiao Wang when they saw him refusing to eat either soft or hard. "They use electric batons to electrocute me, or use long iron bars to beat me." Xiao Wang thought that as long as he is "hard" enough, the other party can't do anything about him. Little did they know that such abuse had just begun.

Almost every day, someone comes down to educate Xiao Wang. "They picked up anything that could hurt people and greeted me." After a while of torment, they saw that Xiao Wang had not yet "enlightened" and the scam company had lost patience. They simply treated him as a commodity and sold him to other scam companies.

Xiao Wang still refused to collude with others, so he was thrown into the dungeon of another company and then received education from different people using different equipment to beat him.

Xiao Wang remembers that he was sold at least twice during this period, and was imprisoned in the dungeon for at least three months. He couldn't remember being beaten dozens of times. The most serious one was when Xiao Wang suffered a slight concussion and had three broken teeth. "At that time, I thought I might not be able to leave here alive," he said

Run away desperately

Unable to bear this hellish life, Xiao Wang also tried to escape.

At the moment when the food delivery personnel brought dinner and opened the door, he discussed with several other prisoners and took the opportunity to rush out together, then ran desperately towards the direction of the wall. "At that time, I only knew how to run frantically, even when I climbed over the wall, I didn't dare to relax. As long as there was one breath left, I couldn't stop."

But to the despair of the group, in addition to the proliferation of fraud groups, there are also suspected illegal armed forces stationed around northern Myanmar. There are checkpoints every few tens of meters, like a dense web, specifically designed to supervise and catch these foreigners who want to leave.

Under such strict guards, Xiao Wang and his team couldn't escape at all. The movement of their escape quickly caught the attention of armed personnel, and they loaded their guns and quickly forced the group to stop. In the end, Xiao Wang and others were sent back to the fraudulent company they were trying to escape from.

As a result, it can be imagined that another round of cruel and inhumane beating, as well as various cruel punishments, greeted Xiao Wang and his companions. They were even starving a few times as a result, until they were tortured to the brink of death, and only then did the members of the fraud gang give up.

Fortunately, after Xiao Wang ran away from home, his family quickly reported the abnormality to the police for help. The police also took it very seriously and quickly traced Xiao Wang to have left Guangxi and entered northern Myanmar based on relevant clues. Thanks to the joint efforts of his family and the police, Xiao Wang was finally rescued. In April this year, Xiao Wang finally broke free from the clutches and was safely brought back to China.

Although returning to his home country, several months of experience in northern Myanmar have caused serious physical and mental harm to Xiao Wang. "Every night when we close our eyes, we have nightmares and our minds are filled with images of being tortured. There, we are like piglets being bought and sold, constantly being beaten, and that's hell."

In the following months, on the one hand, Xiao Wang had to accept punishment and education for his illegal cross-border behavior in accordance with the law, and on the other hand, he had to receive psychological counseling and self-regulation, slowly emerging from that painful shadow.

Until recently, Xiao Wang gradually returned to a relatively normal state of life. He stated that he would start a new life in the future. "I warn everyone with my own experience not to believe the high paying jobs introduced to you by others in the border or abroad. They will restrict your personal freedom and force you to engage in illegal activities such as fraud or gambling. If you do not comply or do not perform well, you will be beaten, locked up in a dark room, or even sold to other fraud organizations, and from then on, there will be no darkness."
