Recently, the Southeast Asian Confucius Institute Joint Conference, hosted by the China International Chinese Education Foundation, was held in Beijing. Nearly 300 representatives from Confucius Institutes and partner institutions from 10 Southeast Asian countries attended the meeting to share their educational experience and explore collaborative innovation within the region.

Experts attending the meeting stated that in recent years, Confucius Institutes have implemented a "Chinese+vocational education" model, built a platform for inter school communication, and expanded the application fields of Chinese.

Promote local tourism industry

"Hello!" "May I ask for any help?" "Thank you!"... In Cambodia, Chinese is favored by ground staff at Phnom Penh International Airport, souvenir shop service personnel, local "beep truck" drivers, and other people. Learning Chinese has become an important skill for local tourism professionals. ".

The Confucius Institute of the Royal Academy of Cambodia was jointly established by Jiangxi Jiujiang University and the Royal Academy of Cambodia. According to Chen Xiaolin, the dean of Jiujiang University, in 2015, the institute launched a training course on hotel and tourism management, specifically inviting teachers from Jiujiang University to teach. This has become the starting point of the "Chinese+Tourism" characteristic course in the hospital.

Chen Xiaolin said, "After launching hotel and tourism management training courses, the hospital has also launched themed training courses such as' Chinese+Doodle Car ',' Chinese+Catering ', and' Chinese+Tour Guide 'around transportation, dining, and other tourism scenarios, achieving many results in serving Cambodia's tourism industry."

Among them, the hotel Chinese major is a characteristic project of the hospital. Chen Xiaolin said, "The college has developed its own Chinese textbooks based on the principles of easy learning and practicality. Combining with the characteristics of hotel management, the textbook content is divided into two parts: general language and special scenario language. The former is suitable for students with short learning time, while the latter is suitable for students with long learning time who want to further improve their Chinese proficiency. In terms of teaching design, the college combines language learning with the process of hotel management, which meets the specific needs of hotel management. The teaching objectives are clear, and students' learning enthusiasm is quite high."

At present, many students majoring in Chinese language in hotels have entered job positions, including talents who have entered local large hotels and well-known enterprises to provide services to Chinese guests.

When it comes to the project planning of "Chinese+Vocational Skills", Chen Xiaolin said, "The institute plans to further explore the form of" Chinese+", such as conducting research and analysis on the relevant market in Cambodia, and designing a new" Chinese+"curriculum system based on its industrial development needs."

High demand for railway talents

With the gradual advancement of cooperation projects between China and Thailand, such as the China Thailand Railway, Thailand needs a large number of talents who understand both railway technology and Chinese. The "China Thailand High Speed Railway Chinese Language Training" is a composite technical talent training program developed by the Confucius Institute of Kongjing University in Thailand for the training of "Chinese+railway technology" in high-speed railway engineering in Thailand.

"For students studying high-speed rail technology, the first step is to clear the language barrier," said the person in charge of the Confucius Institute at Kongjing University in Thailand. "The difficulty of learning Chinese is not low. In order to improve the learning efficiency of students, the institute uses vocabulary cards to teach professional Chinese related to high-speed rail, based on the strong practicality of railway technology, to stimulate students' learning enthusiasm."

The vocational training program of "Chinese+Railway" in Malaysia has also provided more employment opportunities for local youth. The Malaysia East Coast Railway is regarded as a "land bridge" connecting the east and west coasts of Malaysia. The project is jointly constructed by China and Malaysia, and aims to cultivate "Chinese+railway" professionals in the local area through the China Malaysia Railway Talent Training Cooperation Program. The University of Pahang in Malaysia is a well-known institution in the fields of engineering and technology, and its Confucius Institute has been designated as a training institution for "Railway Chinese".

During an interview with our reporter, Ama Zah, Vice President of Pahang University in Malaysia, said, "Since 2018, 'Railway Chinese' has opened 14 classes and has recruited nearly 400 students. It is worth mentioning that the Confucius Institute has compiled textbooks such as' Railway Chinese: Technical Section 'and' Railway Chinese: Experimental Section 'based on industry characteristics, as well as conducted teaching on railway construction materials, laboratory equipment, and instruments. Students in different railway positions use different textbooks to learn different content and enhance their ability to use professional Chinese in a targeted manner."

Wide prospects for intercollegiate exchanges

In order to achieve better talent cultivation results, Pahang University and Beijing Jiaotong University have signed a "Railway Engineering Dual Degree Cooperative Education Agreement" to jointly cultivate railway engineering talents for Malaysia. In February of this year, the first batch of 45 students who had studied Chinese for one semester and were recruited for the project came to Beijing Jiaotong University to study majors such as Vehicle Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Automation.

"After learning Chinese, we gradually learned about the unique charm of Chinese culture and language, and became curious about the new semester." Student representative Muhammad Jikli couldn't help but be excited. He stated that during his studies in Beijing, he will make every effort, actively participate in his studies and various activities, make more friends, and acquire more knowledge.

Ama Zah is optimistic about the prospects of cooperation between the two schools, and he said, "We hope that students from these dual degree programs in railway engineering can graduate smoothly, serve the East Coast Railway of Malaysia, and contribute to Malaysia's socio-economic development."

Akhalawan, Assistant President of Kongjing University in Thailand, introduced that Southwest Jiaotong University and Kongjing University in Thailand have recently signed an agreement to jointly build the Tianyou Railway College. The two schools will cultivate graduates of high-speed rail engineering through personnel exchange visits and railway transportation training, to meet the needs of the development of Thailand's high-speed rail industry.

The Tianyou Railway College project provides us with the opportunity to become high-speed rail engineers. One of the students participating in the project is Pitiwa, a mechanical major student at the School of Engineering at Kongjing University. He is very interested in high-speed rail technology and has submitted a project application. Soon, he will go to Southwest Jiaotong University to learn and train on high-speed rail related knowledge.

Achalawan said, "Tianyou Railway College will cultivate knowledgeable and capable graduates of high-speed rail engineering, helping students enhance their employment competitiveness in the fierce market competition."
