Comrade Hu Ying, a member of the CPC, an academician of the CAS Member, a famous Chinese chemical engineer, a Shanghai education hero, a professor of East China University of Science and Technology, and a doctoral supervisor, died at 3:14 on August 27, 2023 at Zhongshan Hospital at the age of 89.
Academician Hu Ying was born on June 19, 1934 in Shanghai, with ancestral roots in Yingshan County, Hubei Province. He joined the CPC in 1953, graduated from the Department of Chemical Machinery of East China Institute of Chemical Technology in the same year and stayed at the school. He has successively served as assistant, lecturer, associate professor and professor of the Department of Chemistry. In 1993, he was elected as an academician of the CAS Member.
Academician Hu Ying is a great master in the fields of chemical engineering and physical chemistry in China. He has served as the Director of the Teaching Guidance Committee for Engineering Chemistry under the Ministry of Education, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Chemical Society, Vice Chairman of the Shanghai Chemical and Chemical Society, and Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Chemical Engineering, Journal of Chemistry, and Fluid Phase Equilibria. In 1985, he was awarded the title of model worker of Shanghai, the title of young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions in 1986, and the title of Shanghai education hero in 2008.
Academician Hu Ying has been engaged in molecular thermodynamics research for a long time, proposing a modern molecular thermodynamics research method that combines statistical mechanics theory derivation, computer molecular simulation, and experimental measurement. He has led the research on fluid molecular thermodynamics in China for more than 30 years and made outstanding contributions to the development of chemical engineering in China. In the 1980s, breaking through the constraints of traditional understanding, the idea was first proposed that the local composition of fluid mixtures increases with decreasing density, and a radial distribution function model reflecting short-range order and long-range disorder of fluids was constructed; A generalized equation of state is established for the mixture system of associated molecules containing hydrogen bonds, which can be applied to fluids with any chemical association and physical interaction. In the 1990s, the system carried out research on polymer solutions and blends, developed a molecular simulation method for polymer solution phase equilibrium based on lattice models, established a polymer system state equation and a mixed Heigh function model with strict statistical mechanics foundation and very simple form, which can accurately calculate the pVT relationship and various complex phase equilibria of polymer systems; In the continuous thermodynamic study of polydisperse systems, a spline function derivative method was established for phase equilibrium calculation of arbitrarily distributed polydisperse systems, and the nodal line and critical point criteria for polydisperse systems were constructed. After 2000, a polymer density functional theory was established to describe the distribution and properties of polymers at solid-liquid interfaces. For the first time, the idea of incorporating the electronic cloud structure of molecules and the density distribution of non-uniform fluids into a unified density functional theory system for research was proposed. In 1988, he was awarded the Second Prize in Science and Technology Progress by the National Education Commission for his research on molecular thermodynamics of gas solubility, 1990, and 1992; In 1998, "Molecular Thermodynamics of Polymer Systems" was awarded the first prize for scientific and technological progress by the Ministry of Education; In 2003, "Continuous Thermodynamics of Multidisperse Systems" won the second prize of Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award; Received the Science and Technology Award from the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2006; Received the Excellent Achievement Award from the PPEPPD International Conference on Fluid Phase Equilibrium in 2010; In 2011, "Molecular Thermodynamics of Complex Fluids" won the first prize in Shanghai Natural Science. Published monographs such as Molecular Thermodynamics of Fluids, Applied Statistical Mechanics, Modern Chemical Thermodynamics, and Density Functional Theory.

Academician Hu Ying devoted all his wisdom and lifelong energy to the higher education of chemistry and chemical engineering in China, proposing a series of new ideas for education and teaching reform, and promoting the national reform of engineering chemistry courses for the 21st century. Editor in chief of the textbook "Physical Chemistry" and "Physical Chemistry Reference", pioneering the proposal of a new framework for physical chemistry; The teaching philosophy of "less but more refined and more knowledgeable" has been proposed, which has trained a large number of experts in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering for the country. It has won 2 national teaching achievement awards, Baosteel Excellent Teacher Grand Prize, 4 Shanghai Teaching Achievement Awards, 2 national excellent teaching material awards, the first national exemplary individual in teaching material construction and many other awards.
Academician Hu Ying loved his country throughout his life, was loyal to the education cause of the Party, established moral character, and pursued practicality and truth. He demonstrated a deep sense of patriotism and noble moral values, and can be regarded as a model for teachers and academia. He devoted his whole life to educating people, willingly serving as a ladder to success, and was a tireless educator and a great master in the world of peach and plum blossoms; He pursued truth throughout his life, pursued rigorous scholarship, and was a scientist who bravely stood at the forefront and led the way; He devoted his entire life to the school and devoted himself wholeheartedly, making him a respected and outstanding educator. His unfortunate passing is a significant loss for the education, technology, and East China University of Science and Technology in China. All teachers, students, and alumni at home and abroad are deeply saddened.
The farewell ceremony for Academician Hu Ying's body is scheduled to be held on September 2, 2023 at 10:00 am in the lobby of Longhua Funeral Home in Shanghai.
