On July 21st, a reporter from Red Star News arrived at the location where Cheng Shuhun went into the water. His pair of shoes were still placed by the Jinsha River, where the water flow was still very turbulent. Downstream, diagonally opposite was the Nanshan Bridge. "On that day, someone fell into the water near Nanshan Bridge," said Jiang Jinli, a member of the Panzhihua Swimming Association, pointing across the river. This was the area searched by Cheng Shuhui that day.

Several members of the association stated in an interview with Red Star News that Cheng Shuhun had saved people multiple times in the Jinsha River before his death. "He is not only the Secretary General of the Panzhihua Swimming Association, but also one of the organizers of the city's swimming association's drowning prevention propaganda team. He often goes to schools to carry out drowning prevention propaganda. He is very kind and everyone calls him 'Third Brother'."

On the afternoon of May 2, 2021, a woman accidentally fell into the water while taking photos by the river. Cheng Shuhui and several swimmers went down the river to search, and he cooperated with his family to search for three consecutive days; In 2020, a female swimming enthusiast rowed a paddle board by the river and was swept into the turbulent water flow, lying on the paddle board and not daring to move. Cheng Shuhun saw it and went into the water to rescue her, pushing and pulling the paddle board to the shore, and the woman was saved; In August 2019, a man was caught swimming in the river and choked on water. Cheng Shuhun saw him and quickly rushed to the riverbank, jumping into the river. He swam to the man's side and took him away from the danger zone, swimming safely to the shore together

Ms. Chen is the person that Cheng Shuhui once saved. According to her recollection, one day in December 2020, she was swimming at the Geliping Drifting Base. Due to physical reasons, coupled with cold and physical exhaustion, she was extremely panicked and afraid. Her friends did not notice her, so she couldn't shout out and choked on a few mouthfuls of water. It was Cheng Shuhui and Li Da Ge who dragged her ashore. Upon learning that Cheng Shuhui had died, she was very sad and said, "I am very grateful that he saved my life."

According to multiple interviews by Red Star News reporters, on the afternoon of July 18th, the police in the area where the incident occurred also received a report from the public that a man had fallen into the water near Nanshan Bridge. In the evening of that day, the body of the person who fell into the water was found, and the police notified their family. The man was approximately eighteen or nineteen years old. On July 22nd, Red Star News reporters searched around and found a witness from that day. According to his account, two men were playing together at the scene of the incident on that day, and one of them fell into the deep water. "The one on the shore may have gone down to save him, but he couldn't swim and also drowned after going into the water. I jumped down and saved the one behind me. But the other person was missing, and we couldn't find him when we went into the water." After that, he called the police.

The Panzhihua Swimming Association stated that they are organizing relevant materials and preparing to submit them to relevant departments to apply for Cheng Shuhui's "brave action in righteousness". Regarding this, local staff from relevant departments stated that according to the corresponding application conditions and procedures, materials can be submitted in the name of the Swimming Association.
