Positive results have been achieved in the protection and restoration of the original Yangtze River
The next step will be to carry out pilot water ecological assessment in the Yangtze River Basin
Beijing, June 29th (Xinhua) - According to a press conference held by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment today, since the release of the Action Plan for Deepening the Battle of Yangtze River Protection and Restoration, various efforts in the protection and restoration of the Yangtze River have achieved positive results.
In the first five months of this year, the water environment quality of the Yangtze River continued to improve. The proportion of sections with excellent water quality in the Yangtze River Economic Belt is 94%, and the national control section of the main stream of the Yangtze River has reached Class II water quality for three consecutive years.
As of now, 88.2% of township level centralized drinking water source protection areas in the Yangtze River Economic Belt have completed delineation and standardization; The black and odorous water bodies in cities at or above the prefecture level have been basically eliminated, and the treatment of black and odorous water bodies in county-level cities is steadily advancing; A total of 60000 kilometers of river and lake shorelines have been investigated, and more than 42000 problems of direct and disorderly discharge of sewage have been solved; 1703 sewage centralized treatment facilities have been built in industrial parks at or above the provincial level, solving 752 problems such as incomplete sewage pipelines and abnormal operation of facilities; Among the 1164 tailings ponds with environmental issues, 1054 have completed rectification.
Currently, relevant departments are deploying pilot projects for water ecological assessment in the Yangtze River Basin. The Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Water Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and other four departments recently jointly issued the "Scoring Rules for Water Ecological Assessment Indicators in the Yangtze River Basin". The first assessment will be carried out in 2025, classified and evaluated by rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Specific indicators include the number of fish species, the number of key protected aquatic organisms, the number of large benthic animal species, natural shoreline rate, comprehensive pollution status, and flood season pollution intensity.
Liu Youbin, spokesperson for the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, stated that the Ministry will actively and prudently carry out pilot projects for water ecological assessment in the Yangtze River Basin, promote the establishment of a water ecological assessment mechanism in the Yangtze River Basin, guide local governments to fulfill their responsibilities for water ecological protection, and promote continuous improvement of the water ecological environment in the Yangtze River Basin.
