The Yangtze River is the mother river of the Chinese nation and also the habitat of the critically endangered species, the Yangtze finless porpoise known as the "smiling angel".
With the continuous improvement of the ecological environment in the Yangtze River Basin, the population of pufferfish is gradually recovering, and the "smiling angel" is back in people's sight.
Dongting Lake is the second largest freshwater lake in China and one of the main habitats of the Yangtze River finless porpoise. Xinhua News Agency reporter Zhou Yang and English teacher James from the UK came to Dongting Lake to visit several different identities of "finless porpoise guardians".

The He Daming family has been making a living by fishing for generations. This former fishing expert rescued a trapped mother and son of finless porpoises in 2003. Afterwards, he decided to "go ashore" and formed a volunteer team to guard the finless porpoises together. After graduating from university, his son He Dongshun also returned to his hometown and joined this volunteer team.
Hualong Wharf is located on the bank of the Yangtze River, and years of illegal mining activities have caused serious damage to the aquatic vegetation here. After being renovated and restored to greenery, the current Hualong Wharf has become a "finless porpoise bay" where finless porpoises often appear and play. Deng Tieniu is an environmental volunteer at the Lin Ge Old Patrol Monitoring Station of Hualong Wharf, and he has witnessed the improvement of the ecological environment of Hualong Wharf.
The Chenglingji Hydrological Station is located at the confluence of Dongting Lake and the exit of the Yangtze River. Here, hydrological experts like Chen Jianxiang closely monitor the water quality of Dongting Lake, safeguarding the ecological environment on which the finless porpoise relies for survival.
