Per capita income in 40 major cities in 2022: Beijing and Shanghai approach 80000 yuan, Xiamen | City | Per capita income
Cities with high incomes will have a strong attraction to mobile populations. So, which cities have high per capita income for residents?
After sorting out the per capita disposable income of all residents in 40 key cities, the reporter from First Financial News found that currently, there are 7 cities with per capita disposable income exceeding 60000 yuan; Changsha leads the way among cities in the central and western regions.
It should be noted that the data released in Guangzhou, Wuhan, Urumqi, and Lanzhou only includes per capita disposable income data for urban and rural residents, without per capita disposable income data for all residents. First Financial calculated the per capita disposable income of all residents based on the local resident population and urbanization rate. This data may have some errors with the final actual data and is for reference only.
Data shows that out of 40 cities, 13 of them have a per capita disposable income exceeding 60000 yuan, all of which come from developed coastal areas in the east. Currently, there is no city in the central, western, and northeastern regions where the per capita disposable income of all residents exceeds 60000 yuan.
Among them, the top ten cities with per capita disposable income are Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Xiamen, and Wuxi. Among them, the per capita disposable income of all residents in the four first tier cities plus six cities in Suzhou and Hangzhou exceeded 70000 yuan.
Data shows that in 2022, the per capita disposable income of residents in Shanghai was 79610 yuan, which is close to the 80000 yuan mark. In 2022, the per capita disposable income of residents in Beijing was 77415 yuan. From the perspective of urban residents' income, last year the per capita income of urban residents in Shanghai and Beijing exceeded 84000 yuan, showing a clear leading advantage among major cities.
As strong first tier cities, Beijing and Shanghai have developed high-tech industries, modern service industries, and headquarters economies. According to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics in May this year, in 2022, among non private urban units, the highest income was from employees in the information transmission, software, and information technology services industries, with an average annual salary of 220400 yuan, followed closely by the finance, scientific research, and technology services industries, with incomes of 174300 yuan and 163500 yuan respectively. Beijing and Shanghai are cities with a high concentration of high-income industries and jobs. In addition, the headquarters economy in both Beijing and Shanghai is very prominent. For example, Beijing has a large number of headquarters of central enterprises and private enterprise giants, while Shanghai has a large number of regional headquarters of multinational corporations and a large number of private enterprise giants in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, Fujian and other places.
Apart from Shanghai and Beijing, the per capita disposable income of residents in the two first tier cities in southern China, Shenzhen and Guangzhou, as well as Suzhou and Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta, has also exceeded 60000 yuan. Among them, Suzhou, which ranks fifth, is known as the "most impressive prefecture level city". Its per capita disposable income of permanent residents in the city is 70819 yuan, and that of urban permanent residents is 79537 yuan, ranking first among ordinary prefecture level cities. In 2022, Suzhou added 29 domestic and foreign listed companies, including 25 domestic listed companies; At the end of the year, there were 241 domestic and foreign listed companies, including 48 on the Science and Technology Innovation Board, ranking third in the country.

Ding Changfa, Associate Professor of the Department of Economics at Xiamen University, analyzed that in recent years, Suzhou has been at the forefront of economic transformation and upgrading in prefecture level cities, attracting many universities and colleges to settle down and accelerating scientific and technological innovation to fill gaps. At the same time, Suzhou's manufacturing industry is very developed, including industries such as biopharmaceuticals, integrated circuits, and artificial intelligence, which are very prominent. In the process of upgrading the manufacturing industry, the scale of research and development investment is very large.
From the perspective of regional distribution, among the top ten cities with per capita disposable income, the Yangtze River Delta accounts for as many as six. In addition, including other Yangtze River Delta cities such as Wenzhou and Changzhou, the per capita disposable income, especially the per capita income of urban residents, is relatively high.
Outside the eastern coastal areas, the per capita disposable income of all residents in central Changsha reached 58850 yuan, leading among major cities in the central and western regions. As the capital of Hunan, a populous province in central China, Changsha ranked first in the country last year with a population increase of 181300.
From an industrial perspective, Changsha's equipment manufacturing, culture, medicine, and other industries are very prominent. Taking the equipment manufacturing industry as an example, in recent years, Changsha has seen the emergence of star equipment manufacturing enterprises such as Sany Heavy Industry, Zoomlion Heavy Industry, Shanhe Intelligence, and China Railway Construction Heavy Industry, known as the "Capital of Mechanical Engineering in the World". In terms of cultural industry, Changsha has emerged as a popular city on the internet, and the cultural and entertainment industry is very prosperous.
In the central and western regions, Wuhan ranks second in per capita disposable income for all residents. As the largest city in central China, Wuhan's higher education strength ranks among the top five in the country. In recent years, the high-tech industry in Wuhan has developed rapidly. Data shows that Wuhan added 3249 new high-tech enterprises last year, with a total of 12400, ranking first in the total number among cities in central and western China. Wuhan Donghu High tech has gathered dozens of listed companies, making it one of the most densely populated areas for listed companies in China.
Overall, the per capita disposable income level of all residents in a city is mainly related to the local industrial structure and level of industrial development. In addition, the urbanization rate within the urban area of this city also has a significant impact on the per capita disposable income of all residents. Especially, some cities have more counties under their jurisdiction and a larger rural population. Based on the income gap between urban and rural areas, the per capita disposable income level of residents in the entire city will also be lower.
For example, the per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents in Wenzhou reached 73326 yuan, higher than cities such as Xiamen, Foshan, and Dongguan. However, due to the large number of counties under Wenzhou's jurisdiction, the urbanization rate of the permanent population is 73.7%, which is significantly lower than Xiamen, Foshan, and Dongguan. Therefore, the per capita disposable income level of all residents is lower than that of Xiamen, Foshan, and Dongguan.
