Recently, the final acceptance meeting for the national major scientific research instrument development project "Explosive driven ultra high speed high enthalpy shock wave wind tunnel" was held.

The acceptance expert group unanimously agreed to pass the acceptance and evaluated that the wind tunnel is at the international leading level in comprehensive performance indicators such as effective experimental time, total temperature, total pressure, and nozzle flow field size.
The JF-22 ultra high speed wind tunnel project is a national major scientific research instrument development project supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and undertaken by the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was officially launched in 2018, with a development cycle of five years.
Project leader Jiang Zonglin proposed a shock wave reflection forward detonation drive method, which turned the "unusable" detonation wave head into "usable" and "user-friendly". He led the team to build a technical system for the ultra-high speed shock wave wind tunnel and successfully developed the JF-22 ultra-high speed wind tunnel.
This wind tunnel is a super large experimental instrument in the fields of hypersonic and ultra high speed, with a total length of 167 meters, a nozzle outlet of 2.5 meters, a laboratory chamber diameter of 4 meters, and an experimental airflow velocity range of 3-10 km/s. It can reveal the complex medium ultra high speed flow law dominated by molecular dissociation, and can effectively support China's space and space transportation system and the development of ultra high speed aircraft. It is of great significance for promoting the development of aerodynamics and enhancing China's aerospace high-tech research and development capabilities.

From JF-12 to JF-22

The research team for this shock wave wind tunnel in our country originated in the 1950s and 1960s. Under the strategic deployment of Qian Xuesen and Guo Yonghuai, the Institute of Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences established China's first research and development team for hypersonic shock wave wind tunnels.
Grasping the baton of the older generation of scientists, researchers continue to strive, overcome difficulties, and achieve breakthroughs.
In 2012, the JF-12 reproducing wind tunnel with a total length of 265m was successfully developed, which can reproduce flight conditions of 5-9 times the speed of sound. It provides crucial support for the development of major aerospace missions in China.
Now, the JF-22 ultra high speed wind tunnel project has passed acceptance. The JF-22 ultra high speed wind tunnel and the JF-12 reproducing wind tunnel together constitute the only ground experimental platform that covers all flight corridors of nearby spacecraft.
