Spokesperson of the Embassy in Japan: Answering questions from reporters regarding Japan's decision to initiate the discharge of contaminated water from Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea
Q: Today, the Japanese government held a meeting of relevant officials and decided to initiate the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water into the sea as early as the 24th of this month. What is China's comment on this?
Answer: The Japanese side insists on initiating the discharge of nuclear contaminated water from Fukushima, which is extremely selfish and transfers the risk of nuclear pollution to the world. China firmly opposes and strongly protests this and has made solemn representations to the Japanese side. The legitimacy and safety of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea have been questioned by the international community, and there are also many opposing voices in Japan. The claim that the discharge of pollutants into the sea is recognized by the International Atomic Energy Agency and is safe for the marine environment is completely misleading and unconvincing. We strongly urge the Japanese side to immediately cancel the erroneous decision and stop the start of sea discharge, so as not to cause a situation where water cannot be recovered. If the Japanese side persists and harms China's interests, China will take necessary measures to resolutely respond.
