Oppose Japan's strong push for nuclear contaminated water to be discharged into the sea, South Korea's Jeju Island sea women board ships to protest against the ocean | Issue | Japan
The Japanese government's insistence on promoting the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge plan has sparked opposition from multiple parties. Jeju Sea women in South Korea are known as the "daughters of the sea". They dive into the sea without any oxygen supply equipment to catch shrimp by hand and make a living. Once Japan begins to discharge nuclear contaminated water, not only will the foundation for survival be affected, but their own lives and health will also be greatly threatened.
CCTV reporter Zhang Yun: This is the west coast of Jeju Island, South Korea. Experts point out that according to the direction of ocean currents, in the 220 days after the discharge of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water, the contaminated water will first reach this sea area, which is the sea that Jeju Island women in South Korea have relied on for generations to survive.

Jeju Sea women and fishermen recently held a sea protest in Jeju Qianhai, with more than 20 fishing boats simultaneously going out to sea. Banners such as "Oppose Fukushima Nuclear Polluted Water Discharge" and "Protect Jeju Sea Area" were hung on the boats, marking Jeju's first sea demonstration on Japan's nuclear contaminated water discharge plan.
Jeju Hainu Li Yujing: I really enjoy going to the sea. Being a Hainu makes me very happy, but what if this seawater is toxic? Nuclear pollution is not just a problem faced by marine women, nature is cyclical and no one can escape it.

In 2016, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) listed Jeju Sea Women's Culture on the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. After the discharge of nuclear contaminated water, it is very likely that the culture of women in the sea will disappear.
Jeju Road West Guipu Aquatic Industry Collaborative Association will combine Chang Jinmeizi: Sea women dive to the seabed for fishing. If there is nuclear pollution in the seawater, it will directly harm the health of the sea women. Therefore, we have always emphasized that we cannot discharge, but it cannot be stopped by our own efforts. If nuclear pollution is detected in the seawater, of course, the sailor will not go into the sea again, and no one will be a sailor.

Jeju Province Council Environmental City Committee Chairman Song Changquan: It's not just a matter of fishing, it starts with marine organisms living in the ocean, and it will also affect the livelihoods, safety, health, and lives of marine women. Therefore, this is something that we must firmly oppose.
