In recent years, multiple US military bases in Okinawa Prefecture have been found to have severely exceeded the standard for organic fluorides in their surrounding water sources. The most suspected sources of pollution are all directed towards local US military bases. On July 14th, a survey released by Okinawa Prefecture showed that a water quality survey conducted in February this year on rivers surrounding five US military bases showed that 30 out of 44 survey locations had organic fluoride levels exceeding Japan's provisional safety standards. The organic fluoride content in a water source near the US military's Kadena base reached 1800 nanograms per liter, which is 36 times the provisional safety standard.
