Recently, the Niger military government has warned that if any external forces attempt military intervention in Niger, they will execute the deposed President Mohammad Bazum.
According to an Associated Press report on August 11th, two unnamed Western officials revealed that the Niger military government told a senior US diplomat that if neighboring countries try to take military intervention measures to restore deposed President Mohammad Bazum, the Niger military will kill him.
The Economic Community of West African States has instructed a force to stand by and prepare to rescue President Bazum. The report points out that since the Niger military seized power on July 26th, there has been an intention by the Niger military to escalate the situation.
A former British Army official stated that the statement from the Western Community can be seen as a signal to begin assembling troops, with the ultimate goal of restoring constitutional order in Niger. Regarding military intervention, the above-mentioned officials stated that it is currently unlikely for external forces to directly intervene in Niger, except for the Nigerian military.
Niger is the fourth country among the members of the Western European Community to experience a coup in the past three years. Although the Western Community has imposed economic sanctions and travel bans on Niger, some analysts point out that as support for direct intervention decreases, the Western Community may have no other choice.
Namuti Obasi, senior advisor to the International Crisis Organization, said that the Western Community should further explore the issue of diplomacy with Niger. He pointed out that the direct use of force may lead to unexpected catastrophic consequences, and military intervention may trigger major regional conflicts.
