Xiangyang, Hubei is located in the middle reaches of the Han River, and the automobile industry is a traditional advantageous industry here. In the 1980s, the construction of Dongfeng Automobile Xiangyang Base began, marking the beginning of the development of the local automotive industry. Nowadays, Xiangyang is seizing the development opportunities of the new energy vehicle industry, accelerating the development of intelligent connected vehicles, and promoting the shift and acceleration of the automotive industry through innovation and creation.
At BYD Xiangyang Industrial Park, one new energy vehicle power battery is taken offline every three seconds. "This type of battery has a flat and long appearance, like blades. Compared with traditional battery packs, we have significantly improved the volume utilization rate through structural innovation." BYD employee Zhang Mingda told reporters that batteries are the power source and core component of new energy vehicles, and "blade batteries" are products independently developed by the company.
In recent years, Xiangyang has taken the lead in laying out the new energy track, issuing the Action Plan to Accelerate the Transformation and Upgrading of Xiangyang's Automobile Industry for High Quality Development, and establishing a special fund for the promotion and application of new energy vehicles. Last year, BYD Xiangyang Industrial Park was completed and put into operation. It is expected that 16 production lines will be fully put into operation in September this year, greatly improving the localization rate of key components and providing upstream products for more than 20 local component factories. The project is fully put into operation and can produce 30GWh of blade power batteries annually, equipped with 600000 new energy vehicles, with an annual output value of 14 billion yuan.
Faced with the opportunity of upgrading the automotive industry, traditional automotive component enterprises in Xiangyang actively rely on technological innovation to achieve momentum transformation. Sun Guangzhong, the head of the new energy sector of Camel Group, a Chinese private enterprise with a headquarters in Xiangyang and an automotive battery manufacturer, introduced that since 2016, Camel Group has invested in the power battery sector and transformed into low-voltage lithium batteries in 2018. Now, it is actively laying out three major industries: low-voltage lithium batteries for automobiles, energy storage lithium batteries, and lithium battery recycling. "The group also plans to invest 6.8 billion yuan to build the world's largest low-voltage lithium battery industry park in Xiangyang." Sun Guangzhong said that in recent years, the company has been actively promoting the gathering of supporting enterprises in Xiangyang to help the local new energy vehicle industry "string together".
The development of key components has attracted upstream and downstream industries. Tenglong Automobile is a high-end customized vehicle manufacturing enterprise that integrates research and development, manufacturing, sales, and service. Its products mainly include new energy buses, official and business vehicles, specialized vehicles, and various smart transportation equipment. "In 2016, the company settled in Xiangyang and was interested in the mature industrial supporting system here," said Zhou Shengming, Deputy General Manager of Technology Production at Tenglong Automobile Company. At present, Tenglong Company is deeply cultivating core areas of the automotive industry such as intelligent connected autonomous driving, and continues to maintain high investment in hardware equipment and innovative research and development.

While introducing external leading enterprises, Xiangyang is also encouraging local enterprises to transform and develop. At the headquarters workshop of Changyuan Donggu, workers are systematically producing automotive engine components. Feng Shengzhong, Deputy General Manager of the company, introduced, "Since last year, we have mainly focused on the new energy sector, matching with well-known domestic new energy vehicle companies. Currently, we have built 6 fully automated production lines, and the annual production of new energy products reaches 700000 sets. All of them will be put into use and mass-produced for supply in August this year."
With a strong foundation in the automotive industry and strong policy guidance, Xiangyang has become a high-quality soil for the development of the new energy vehicle industry, and more and more related enterprises are growing here. Last year, the total vehicle production in Xiangyang city exceeded 300000 vehicles, and automobile enterprises above designated size achieved an output value of over 240 billion yuan, ranking first among prefecture level cities in China in terms of scale.
