NATO, Türkiye and Sweden issued a joint statement! Erdogan's Conditions for Sweden's "Accession" to the Treaty Türkiye | Leader | Sweden
On July 10 local time, the leaders of NATO, Türkiye and Sweden issued a joint statement after their meeting. The statement said that since the last NATO summit, Sweden and Türkiye have worked closely to address Türkiye's legitimate security concerns. As part of this process, Sweden has amended its constitution and laws, significantly expanded anti-terrorism cooperation against the PKK, and resumed arms exports to Türkiye.
The statement also said that Sweden and Türkiye agreed to continue their cooperation under the trilateral permanent joint mechanism established by the Madrid NATO Summit in 2022 and the new bilateral security contract. The two sides will hold annual ministerial meetings and set up working groups as appropriate.
The statement also emphasizes that Sweden will propose a roadmap to combat terrorism and will continue to engage in counter-terrorism cooperation after joining NATO. Sweden will actively support Türkiye's efforts to join the EU.
On this basis, President Erdogan of Türkiye will submit the protocol of Sweden's accession to NATO to its parliament and work hard to ensure that the protocol is approved by the parliament.

Erdogan proposed the conditions for Sweden's accession to the treaty
According to the report of Türkiye's media on July 10 local time, Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the same day before going to Lithuania to attend the NATO summit that if the EU opened the accession negotiations for Türkiye, he would support Sweden's application for NATO membership.
Erdogan stressed that Türkiye has always supported NATO's open policy and hopes to fulfill its commitments. "If the EU opens the door for Türkiye, Türkiye will also open the door for Sweden." He will raise this issue to leaders of other NATO member countries during the NATO summit.
Türkiye formally applied to join the European Union in 1987, obtained the candidacy in 1999, and started the accession negotiation in 2005. However, the negotiation process was blocked, and it has not yet joined the European Union. On July 9, Erdogan also talked about Türkiye's accession to the EU when talking with US President Biden on the phone.

German Prime Minister Schultz opposes the "linkage" between Sweden's NATO membership and Türkiye's EU membership
On the 10th local time, German Prime Minister Schultz publicly objected to linking Sweden's accession to NATO with Türkiye's resumption of the EU accession process. In his words, these two issues are unrelated, so they should not be merged into one discussion.
Earlier in the day, Türkiye's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that whether his country would approve Sweden's application for NATO membership depended on the resumption of Türkiye's EU accession negotiations. According to the regulations, all NATO members, including Türkiye, must agree to formally approve Sweden's accession to NATO. So far, Türkiye has refused to approve Sweden's application.
