On June 17th, two children in a residential area in Pingdingshan, Henan fell from the 29th floor to the negative second floor along a ventilation duct. On the morning of the 20th, Ms. Lu, the cousin of the two children, told Jimu News reporters that the two children unfortunately died and there were no safety warning signs at the ventilation duct openings.
According to Ms. Lu, the two children are siblings. The older brother is 10 years old and the younger sister is 6 years old. They live in Jinyu Lanwan Community, Pingdingshan City.
"Their home is on the 29th floor of the top floor of the east unit of Building 7 in the community," Ms. Lu told reporters. The incident occurred around 7:10 pm on the 17th, when the child's grandmother was cooking at home and the two children ran to the rooftop to play. Before long, the child's grandmother heard a deafening noise.
At that time, the child's grandmother immediately went to the rooftop to look for the child, but did not see the child. She only noticed that the cover plate on a cement platform over a meter high on the rooftop was missing, and a hole appeared, inside which dust kept coming out.
"At that time, my grandmother didn't expect the child to fall in. She couldn't find the child on the rooftop, so she went downstairs to look for it." Ms. Lu said, "At that time, the family found the property management, and later contacted the fire station. After searching the community surveillance, they couldn't find the child.". Later, someone analyzed that the two may have fallen into the pipe opening on the roof.
Subsequently, the fire department chiseled open the walls from the fourth and second floors respectively, connected the pipes, and finally discovered the two children below. Finally, the two children were pulled out of the basement. Two hours had passed since the incident, and the children were no longer breathing.
The picture sent by Ms. Lu to the reporter shows that the pipe outlet in the accident protrudes from the rooftop ground, with a cement platform over one meter high and a cover plate at the pipe outlet.
The family said that on the day the child had an accident, they went to the scene and saw only a part of the cover plate at the entrance of the cave that was damaged and fragmented. At that time, they realized that the cover was laid with less than two centimeters of cement on a wooden board.
Ms. Lu said that she later learned that this duct was the ventilation duct of the building, extending vertically from the 29th floor roof to the basement. "This house has been built for ten years, and the wooden boards have all decayed, basically without any load-bearing capacity." Ms. Lu said that there is no sign next to the pipeline mouth, even if there are words such as "No Treading" written on it, the 10-year-old child can read and cannot climb up.
