In 2023, the recommendation for the election of additional members of the CAS Member and the nomination for the election of additional members of the CAE Member have been completed. On August 31, the list of effective candidates for additional election of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering was published online, including 583 effective candidates for additional election of academicians of the CAS Member and 655 effective candidates for additional election of academicians of the CAE Member, totaling 1238.

It should be noted that in 2023, there will be 79 additional members of the CAS Member and no more than 90 additional members of the CAE Member.

Among the two lists published on the Internet on August 31, there were 45 effective candidates in the field of special recommendation in the co election of academicians of the CAS Member, and 34 effective candidates in the special channel in the co election of academicians of the CAE Member.

"Special" mechanism

The Implementation Measures for the Selection of CAS Member Academicians mentioned that the presidium of the academic department set up a special recommendation mechanism according to the needs of national development and academician team building. The measures will be formulated separately.

Pengpai News noticed that in the 2017 supplementary election, the Presidium of the Chinese Academy of Sciences further strengthened its support for emerging and interdisciplinary fields, as well as national defense and security. It specifically established a special recommendation mechanism for emerging and interdisciplinary fields, established a special recommendation group for national defense and security, and specifically increased the number of seats to support emerging and interdisciplinary candidates. In the same year, 5 candidates were elected through a special recommendation mechanism.

In the 2019 election of academicians, the official website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that, in order to implement the relevant spirit and requirements of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, the Chinese Academy of Sciences specially formulated the Interim Measures for the Evaluation of Special Recommendations for the Election of CAS Member Academicians, which specifically recommended and evaluated candidates working in special fields, and added five special quotas to support them. In that year, a total of five candidates were elected through the special recommendation mechanism.

In the 2021 additional selection of academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, through the special recommendation and evaluation mechanism, 5 people were elected in the fields of national defense and security, and 3 people were elected in emerging and interdisciplinary fields.

In addition, the Implementation Measures for the Election of CAE Member Academicians clearly stipulates that a special channel for the election of academicians in the field of national defense and national security will be set up, and the number of additional candidates will be separately nominated, evaluated and allocated. The details are specified in the Detailed Rules for the Operation of Special Channels for the Selection of CAE Member. The special channel implements a special mechanism for nomination, and candidates nominated through academicians or national academic organizations are not considered as special channel candidates.

List of highlights

There are many highlights in the two lists that have been released online this time.

For example, Yan Ning, a famous structural biologist, was included in the list of effective candidates for the co election of academicians of the CAS Member. Her work units are Tsinghua University and Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences, and the recommender is academician Sui Senfang.

45 year old Yan Ning returned from overseas last year and became the Dean of Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences.

She studied for a bachelor's degree in Biology at Tsinghua University from 1996 to 2000, and later pursued a doctoral degree in Molecular Biology at Princeton University in the United States, under the guidance of Professor Shi Yigong, engaged in research on cell apoptosis. In October 2007, after completing postdoctoral training in Princeton, he was hired by the School of Medicine at Tsinghua University, becoming the youngest professor and doctoral supervisor at the time. In 2017, Yan Ning was appointed as a lifelong professor at the Department of Molecular Biology at Princeton University in the United States. Later that year, Yan Ning, 39, was also included in the preliminary list of candidates for the 2017 CAS Member co election.

Chang Chao, 39 years old, was also included in the list of valid candidates for the 2023 CAS Member co election. His work unit is the National Defense Science and Technology Innovation Institute of the PLA Academy of Military Sciences.

Public information shows that Chang Chao has been engaged in research on high-power microwave plasma and terahertz biophysics for a long time. He proposed a method of suppressing microwave multiplication and breakdown using periodic surface and resonant magnetic fields, breaking through the technical bottleneck of high-power microwave system power capacity. He once won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award as the first complete person at the age of 35.

Xu Wenwei and Wang Haifeng

At the same time, Xu Wenwei, director of Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and president of the Strategic Research Institute, and Wang Haifeng, chief technology officer of Baidu and director of the National Engineering Research Center for Deep Learning Technology and Application, will once again launch an attack on the CAE Member.

Xu Wenwei was once shortlisted for the list of valid candidates for the 2021 academician additional election of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, while Wang Haifeng was successively shortlisted for the list of valid candidates for the 2019 and 2021 academician additional election of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

In addition, Wu Kaicheng, Chief Scientist of Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd., and Lian Yubo, Chief Scientist of BYD Group, Chief Automotive Engineer, and President of the Automotive Engineering Research Institute, have also been included in the list of valid candidates for the 2023 Chinese Academy of Engineering academician selection.
