According to Reuters on July 26th, some soldiers appeared on Niger's national television on the evening of the 26th, announcing that President Mohammad Bazum had been relieved of his power.
Colonel Amadou Abdullah appeared with nine other officers, who read out a statement. He said, "Due to the deteriorating security situation and poor management, the current regime has been put to an end." Abdullah said that the borders of Niger have been closed, a curfew has been imposed nationwide, and all national institutions have been suspended.
They warned against any "foreign intervention" and added that they will ensure the safety of Bazum.
The military takeover marks the seventh coup in the country since 2020, according to reports. It may further complicate the efforts of the West to assist Sahel countries in combating "jihadist rebellions".
According to a report by Agence France Presse on July 26th, a United Nations spokesperson said that UN Secretary General Guterres had a phone call with Niger's President Bazum on the 26th, expressing "full support" for the leader who was apparently detained due to a coup attempt.
The United Nations spokesperson tweeted, "This afternoon, the Secretary General had a phone call with Bazum. He expressed full support and solidarity with the President of Niger.".
Sources say that Bazum was detained by members of his guard.
The Niger Presidential Office posted on social media, saying, "Some members of the Presidential Guard attempted to gain support from the armed forces and the National Guard, but were unsuccessful."
