The Cooperation Mechanism between BRICS Countries and BRICS Countries
In 2006, the foreign ministers of Brazil, Russia, India, and China held their first meeting during the United Nations General Assembly, marking the beginning of cooperation among the BRICS countries. In June 2009, leaders of BRICS countries held their first meeting in Yekaterinburg, Russia, to promote the upgrading of BRICS cooperation to the summit level. In 2011, South Africa officially joined the BRICS, which expanded into five countries and was named BRICS in English.
The land area of BRICS countries accounts for 26.46% of the world's total territory, and their population accounts for 41.93% of the world's total population. It is estimated that in 2021, the total economic output of the five countries accounted for approximately 25.24% of the world, and the total trade volume accounted for 17.9% of the world. Since 2009, leaders of BRICS countries have held a total of 14 meetings and 9 informal meetings.
Since the establishment of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, the foundation of cooperation has been increasingly solid, and the fields have gradually expanded. A comprehensive and multi-level framework has been formed, led by leaders' meetings and supported by foreign ministers' meetings and high-level representatives on security affairs, to carry out practical cooperation in dozens of fields such as economy and trade, finance and technology, industry, agriculture, culture, education, health, think tanks, and sister cities.
