On August 17th, local time, US Senator Bernie Sanders fiercely criticized the current US healthcare system in an article posted on the US Today Beast website.
He stated in the article that almost every American understands that the healthcare system in the United States is fragmented, dysfunctional, and deteriorating.
The per capita healthcare expenditure in the United States is almost twice that of any other country, however, the United States remains the only major country that does not guarantee universal access to healthcare -85 million people are uninsured or underinsured. This number has recently increased as millions of people have lost the medical benefits they enjoyed during the pandemic.
Despite enormous healthcare expenditures, life expectancy for Americans is much lower than that of almost any other wealthy country, and in many parts of the United States, life expectancy is still declining. It is incredible that there is a gap of at least 10 years in lifespan between the rich and the poor, and thousands of Americans die each year due to the inability to access the necessary healthcare.
Sanders pointed out, "The price we pay for prescription drugs in the United States is the highest in the world, but a quarter of Americans cannot afford the prescription drugs prescribed by doctors. In addition, a major reason for the continuous increase in hospital care and insurance costs is that many newly launched drugs for cancer and other diseases now cost over $200000 per treatment."

Sanders said that the primary healthcare system is even worse. There is a severe shortage of doctors, nurses, dentists, and pharmacists in the United States, and some Americans have to wait for several months to make appointments with doctors. Some have to travel long distances to find doctors.
The United States has not invested in disease prevention, allowing people to easily and timely access the necessary medical services when needed. Instead, it has spent a lot of money on hospitals and tertiary healthcare, forcing people with common illnesses to enter emergency rooms - the most expensive form of primary healthcare.
Major healthcare organizations in the United States believe that the country's investment in primary healthcare is far from sufficient. They understand that focusing on disease prevention and providing medical homes for Americans can not only save lives and alleviate pain, but also save billions of dollars.
At the end of the article, Sanders stated that as the Chairman of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, he is working to enact legislation to address the series of healthcare crises facing the United States. If this legislation is passed, it will be an important step towards a more humane and reasonable healthcare system.
