Many people feel that the rainfall in the north this summer seems to be "particularly heavy". Recently, extreme heavy rainfall has occurred in the North China, Huanghuai, and Northeast regions, leading to flooding disasters. Why is the rain in the north concentrated during this period? From actual data, is there really too much rainfall this year?
According to experts from the China Meteorological Administration, from the second half of July to the first half of August each year, the main rain belt in eastern China moves northward to the northern and northeastern regions, reaching the northernmost position of monsoon precipitation throughout the year. During this period, North China, Northeast China, and some parts of the Yellow and Huai River experienced a period of concentrated precipitation, reaching the peak of annual rainfall, commonly known as "seven down and eight up".
Around late July, the northern edge of the summer monsoon advances to the North China region. At the same time, the subtropical high pressure system in the Western Pacific is moving northward, and the southwest or easterly airflow on its southwest side continuously transports water vapor from the ocean to the north, providing sufficient water vapor conditions for rainfall in North China. Once warm and humid air meets cold air moving eastward and southward, it is easy to form heavy or sustained precipitation. In addition, "seven down and eight up" is also a period of active typhoons in the northwest Pacific. Typhoons themselves carry a large amount of water vapor, and once they move northward and affect northern regions, rainfall usually increases significantly.
During this period, the North China and Northeast regions have the most concentrated and intense rainfall, with a high probability of extreme rainfall occurring. The cumulative precipitation in just one month may account for one-third of the entire year.
According to data from the China Meteorological Administration, the rainy season in North China started on July 22nd this year, 4 days later than usual, and has not yet ended as of August 16th. During this period, the precipitation in southern Beijing, central and southern Hebei, northern Henan and other areas was 1 to 2 times higher than the same period in previous years, and locally more than 2 times higher.
During this year's "Seven Down and Eight Up" period, there were four large-scale significant precipitation weather processes in northern China. From July 29 to August 1, the extreme rainstorm weather process occurred in Beijing Tianjin Hebei region due to the influence of typhoon residual low pressure circulation and low-level jet stream. The cumulative rainfall in southwestern Beijing, central and southwestern Hebei, and other areas ranges from 350 to 600 millimeters, with a maximum cumulative rainfall of 1003 millimeters; The rainfall area of over 100 millimeters is 170000 square kilometers. 14 national meteorological observation stations in Hebei and Beijing have exceeded historical extremes in daily rainfall, and 26 stations have exceeded historical extremes in cumulative rainfall over 3 days.
During this period, the rainfall in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, Jinan and other places exceeded the same period of the year, with Shijiazhuang receiving 409.1 millimeters of rainfall, which is nearly three times that of the same period of the year. From the number of rainy days, it can be seen that the number of rainy days in several major cities in the north this year is not higher than the same period in the previous year, but the rainfall has exceeded the same period in the previous year. This also indicates that the rainfall this year has come quickly and fiercely. The high rainfall intensity and accumulated rainfall in a short period of time objectively confirm the public's subjective perception of excessive rainfall in the northern region.
Statistics show that in recent years, the number of stations with rainfall exceeding historical extremes has significantly increased during the "seven down and eight up" period, and the trend of frequent extreme weather has become more apparent. In the past two years, the duration of the rainy season in North China has been 59 days and 50 days respectively, both significantly exceeding the annual average of 29.6 days.
Meteorologists pointed out that the increase of atmospheric water content, the instability of the climate system, and the intensification of urban heat island effect caused by global warming will increase the frequency and intensity of rainstorm, which will lead to landslides, debris flows, mountain floods, floods in small and medium-sized rivers, urban waterlogging and other secondary disasters. Compared with the southern region, which has more rainfall all the year round, the northern regions have relatively insufficient experience in resisting typhoon storms and rain, so it is necessary to vigorously improve the awareness of disaster prevention and mitigation and the coping ability.
