More than a hundred plants in scale! Discovery of the largest actual community of Lonicera japonica in Beijing | City | Lilac
The reporter learned from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Greening that during the joint inspection of the city's wild plant protection, the largest actual community of Lonicera japonica in China was found on a cliff on a ridge in Qingshui Town, Mentougou District. Preliminary on-site statistics show that there are over 100 plants, with the highest plant being over 1 meter.
Lilac leaf Lonicera japonica is a national second level key protected wild plant. It is a deciduous shrub of the Lonicera family, with a flowering period from May to June and a fruiting period of July. The fruit is red and round, and the height of the well growing plant can reach 2 meters. It is found in Hebei and Beijing in China. According to Professor Zhang Zhixiang from Beijing Forestry University, the wild reproductive ability of Lonicera japonica is poor and it is at an extremely dangerous level. Dozens of wild plants have been discovered by chance, and the scale of over a hundred plants is the first discovery in the country. In 2022, this species was included in the "14th Five Year Plan" for the rescue and protection of extremely small populations of wild plants in China by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. According to the "Key Protected Wild Plants in Beijing" published in 2014, Lonicera japonica is "found in Songshan, Yanqing, Beijing, with only three plants.".

He Yi, a second level researcher at the Resource Protection Center of the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscape and Greening, told reporters that in recent years, Beijing has continuously increased its efforts in ecological construction and continued to carry out biodiversity conservation. The latest survey shows that 608 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates have been discovered in the city, and 2088 species of vascular plants have been recorded.
With the continuous development of background investigation of wild plants, investigation of plant germplasm resources, and protection of rare and endangered plants in situ, in situ, and ex situ, some extremely small species of plants such as Lonicera syringae, kiwifruit with dog dates, Cyprinus grandiflorus, Fritillaria verticillata, Ranunculus chinensis, and Acer leaved Clematis have been discovered and protected. The discovery of the population of Lonicera japonica is one of the important achievements in the protection of wild plants in Beijing. In the future, we will vigorously carry out field investigations of resources, protect wild populations, organize seedling propagation and field returns, further revitalize wild populations, and promote scientific research and comprehensive value mining of Lonicera japonica.
