Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Strongly urges Japan to correct its erroneous decision to revoke the plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea. International | Concern | Water Discharge
On August 22nd, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked questions about the discharge of Japanese nuclear contaminated water into the sea.
Wang Wenbin stated that the Japanese government, disregarding the serious concerns and resolute opposition of the international community, insists on announcing the launch of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea on August 24th, openly transferring the risk of nuclear pollution to the world and putting its own interests above the long-term well-being of all humanity. This move is extremely selfish and irresponsible. China is seriously concerned and strongly opposes the solemn representations it has made to Japan.
Wang Wenbin pointed out that for over two years, the legitimacy, legality, and safety of the Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge plan have been questioned by the international community. The Japanese side has not resolved major concerns from the international community regarding the long-term reliability of nuclear contaminated water purification devices, the accuracy of nuclear contaminated water data, and the effectiveness of monitoring arrangements for discharge into the sea. Stakeholders such as China have repeatedly pointed out that if nuclear contaminated water is safe, it is not necessary to discharge it, and if it is not safe, it should not be discharged.
Wang Wenbin said that Japan's push to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea is unfair, unreasonable, and unnecessary. Unfortunately, Japan has turned a blind eye to international calls, deliberately creating a false image of safe and harmless discharge into the sea, and even unjustly accusing neighboring countries that express legitimate concerns. Its actions have aroused strong indignation from neighboring countries and domestic people. The ocean is a common property of all humanity, and Japan cannot be allowed to dump nuclear contaminated water.
Wang Wenbin stated that China strongly urges Japan to correct its erroneous decision to withdraw its plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea, communicate with neighboring countries in good faith with a sincere attitude, dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a responsible manner, and accept strict international supervision. China will take all necessary measures to maintain the marine environment, food safety, and public health.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs: Urge Japan to communicate with neighboring countries in good faith with a sincere attitude and properly dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a responsible manner
On August 22nd, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked that regarding the discharge of contaminated water from Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea, China had already strengthened import controls on Japanese food before the launch of the plan. Today, the Japanese government has officially decided to initiate sea discharge. Is the Chinese government considering introducing new regulatory measures? If the Japanese government proposes to China the suggestion of communication and contact with experts related to nuclear contaminated water discharge in the future, will China accept it?
Wang Wenbin stated that the Chinese government adheres to the principle of putting the people first, and relevant departments will take all necessary measures to maintain food safety and the physical health of the Chinese people.
Wang Wenbin emphasized that we strongly urge Japan to correct its erroneous decision, withdraw its plan to discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea, communicate with neighboring countries in good faith with a sincere attitude, properly dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a responsible manner, and accept strict international supervision.
