On August 16th, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked, according to reports, the first preparatory meeting for the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons concluded in Vienna last week. May I ask if the Chinese side has any comments on this?
Wang Wenbin introduced that from July 31st to August 11th, the first preparatory meeting for the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was held in Vienna, marking the start of a new round of review cycle. Currently, the global security environment is undergoing complex evolution, and the competition for strategic security among major powers is intensifying. The attending parties had a comprehensive and in-depth discussion on the implementation of the Treaty, and despite differences, they all demonstrated a desire to jointly uphold the Treaty mechanism. The Treaty is the cornerstone of the international nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation system, and China has always firmly supported the purpose and objectives of the Treaty. During the conference, the Chinese side participated in various substantive work with a positive and constructive attitude, actively promoting the role of the Treaty in serving security and development, while also firmly safeguarding its legitimate security and development rights.
Wang Wenbin emphasized that China adheres to the policy of not being the first to use nuclear weapons, and possessing nuclear weapons has never been to seek hegemony, but to deter nuclear war. China firmly upholds the international nuclear non-proliferation system and opposes prioritizing geopolitical interests over nuclear non-proliferation. China actively promotes international cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy, emphasizing that the peaceful use of nuclear energy cannot come at the cost of sacrificing the natural environment and human health.
