Ministry of Ecology and Environment (National Nuclear Safety Administration) answers a reporter's question: Japan initiates the discharge of nuclear contaminated water into the sea
The relevant person in charge of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment answered the reporter's question on Japan's launch of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea
Q: Today, Japan initiated the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the sea. What do you think? What targeted arrangements does China have in monitoring the marine radiation environment?
Answer: The Japanese government forcibly initiated the discharge of contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant, putting its own interests above the long-term well-being of all humanity, which is extremely selfish and irresponsible. We urge Japan to listen to the voice of the international community, effectively dispose of nuclear contaminated water in a scientific, safe, and transparent manner, and accept strict international supervision.
Our department attaches great importance to the issue of Japan's Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge into the sea. In 2021 and 2022, China organized and carried out monitoring of the marine radiation environment in the waters under its jurisdiction, and understood the current background situation of the marine radiation environment in relevant waters. The monitoring results indicate that the activity concentration of artificial radioactive nuclides in the seawater and marine organisms under China's jurisdiction is normal and generally within the range of fluctuations over the years.
Currently, our department is organizing the monitoring of the marine radiation environment in China's jurisdictional waters for the year 2023 in accordance with the concept of monitoring key areas, covering jurisdictional waters, and mastering key channels. In the future, our department will continue to strengthen relevant monitoring work, timely track and analyze the possible impact of Fukushima nuclear contaminated water discharge on our marine radiation environment, and effectively safeguard our national interests and people's health.
