Millions of lives are affected, and the largest navigable lake in South America is facing drying up?! here
According to CNN on the 3rd, after experiencing unprecedented winter heatwaves, the water level of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest and largest navigable lake in South America, is rapidly decreasing. The tourism, fishing, and agricultural production activities that support 3 million local people have been affected.
Experts suggest that if the lake water evaporates at the same rate as the same period in previous years in the coming months, the water level will drop to the lowest level since 1996 by December this year.
A recent satellite image study from 1992 to 2020 showed that Lake Titicaca lost approximately 120 million tons of water annually due to reduced precipitation and changes in runoff. Lake Titicaca is located in the Andes Mountains at the border of Peru and Bolivia, with an area of approximately 8300 square kilometers and an elevation of 3812 meters. It is the largest freshwater lake in South America.
