I took the college entrance examination in July 1983, coinciding with the initial stage of China's reform and opening up. Along with China's economic reform, the reform of the college entrance examination system, which selects college students through exams, has greatly changed the fate of our generation.
The college entrance examination was almost the only way out for that generation, and it was a very important checkpoint in life. At that time, the admission rate was relatively low and there was a lot of pressure. Our only idea was to accept national selection through the college entrance examination, attend good universities, learn knowledge well, and give back to society. It was just that simple.
The group of people who took the college entrance examination in the 1980s had a special attachment to it, and the college entrance examination system greatly changed China's modernization process. Now, it can be seen that the backbone of China's main battlefield in various fields is basically the group of people who emerged from universities after the reform and opening up, becoming the backbone of society.
For over 40 years, although there have been many areas that require reform in the college entrance examination, it remains the most recognized and relatively fair talent selection method among the general public.
Of course, with the diversified development of society, students have more opportunities to further their studies. No matter when, as long as you think clearly and start working hard, this society will give you opportunities.
As for how to choose a major, my college entrance examination score is about 560 points, ranking first in Suzhou City. I have no problem attending Tsinghua University and Peking University. I wanted to study missiles in national defense and go to Harbin Institute of Technology, but it was too far from home and my family was poor. So I applied to the Mathematics and Automation departments of the University of Science and Technology of China, and later transferred to the Space Physics major. Unexpectedly, this became a lifelong research direction.
I want to tell college students that doing what interests you the most is crucial. Now China has achieved a great leap from standing up, getting rich to becoming strong. Standing at a turning point in history, young people need to work harder and bravely shoulder heavy responsibilities.

According to public information, Dou Xiankang was born in Sixian, Anhui in 1966 and was admitted to the Department of Earth and Space Science at the University of Science and Technology of China in September 1983, majoring in Space Physics. In 1989, he studied remote sensing physics at the Seventh University of Paris in France and obtained a master's and doctoral degree. In 1995, he returned to his alma mater to teach at the University of Science and Technology of China. In 2005, he became the Vice President of the University of Science and Technology of China, and in December 2016, he was transferred to the position of President of Wuhan University. In November 2017, he was elected as an academician of the CAS Member.

As far as I am concerned, taking the college entrance examination was over thirty years ago. But every season of the college entrance examination, there is always a feeling of both nervousness and excitement. In 1981, I took the college entrance examination at my hometown Shenzhen No.1 Middle School in Hebei Province and was admitted to university in Beijing. I stepped out of the small Dongjiazhuang with only about two hundred people and since then, I have had a vast world.
A few years ago, I attended several professional conferences of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. One time, while discussing the provisions of international conventions with representatives from various countries, I suddenly felt a sense of vicissitudes: how could a little boy from a tiny village in central Hebei think of sitting here and discussing nuclear conventions with foreign experts when he grew up? If it weren't for the college entrance examination, all of this would be absolutely unimaginable. The college entrance examination has a profound impact on one's life. It is an unforgettable life experience and an important driving force to motivate oneself to forge ahead.
Recalling the college entrance examination back then, it was quite legendary. At that time, the educational system was very different from today. Primary school was a five-year program, while middle and high schools were both two-year programs. I was the last graduate of a two-year junior high school and a two-year high school program. From attending elementary school at the age of five or six to taking the college entrance examination at the age of fourteen, there were only nine years in total.
At that time, I was in my sophomore year of high school, majoring in arts and sciences. I chose my own humanities class. A few months later, my mother went from the village to the county school to see me. I heard the school gatekeeper say, "How can I let my child learn humanities? Only when math, physics, and chemistry are not very good can I learn humanities!" My mother had no idea what arts and sciences were. She thought it was because my child was bullied by the school, so she went to the school leaders and asked me to be transferred back to science. After I finished my physical education class and saw my mother, she happily told me, "I transferred you back to science class," which made me cry in anger.
After being forced to return to the science class, I participated in the college entrance examination as a science student and by chance, I ranked first in the county. Later, it was rumored that he had won first place in the science college entrance examination in the previous class. At that time, I was in County No.1 Middle School, in Xiaodongjiazhuang, and in the circle of relatives and friends, it was a popular story. Ultimately, all of this was triggered by the old man who rang the school bell.
The college entrance examination is a major event in life, as well as in the family. Before I took the college entrance examination, my father, who was working in Beijing, took a special leave and returned to the county town to stay with relatives for three days. My father is usually very serious and kind during those days. He even lent me his watch for exams. After the last exam, I excitedly returned to my relatives and reported the exam situation to my father.
After listening to me for a long time, my father never interjected. When I finished talking about the exam situation in high spirits, my father asked calmly, "Where's my watch?" At this moment, I suddenly remembered that I was too excited after submitting the paper and left my father's watch on the exam table in a hurry! Hurry back to the exam room in a hurry, it's already empty, where can we still find it! At that time, a watch worth over a hundred yuan was an important family property. My father had been wearing it for many years, but surprisingly, I lost it during the college entrance examination!
Thirty years after my college entrance examination, in 2011, my daughter took the exam and I had already been transferred to work in Kunming. Thinking of my father's special leave from go home to his hometown during the college entrance examination, I also found a reason to fly back to Beijing from Kunming on business. It was already the second day of the college entrance examination when I arrived in Beijing. I went straight to my daughter's exam room outside the school, and the entrance was crowded with waiting parents. I couldn't help but feel sorry for the hearts of parents all over the world.
When I was transferred to work in Qujing, the day I checked in happened to be June 5th, the eve of the college entrance examination. After dinner, strolling around, seeing the slogans "Exam Important Area, No Entry for Idle People" and the signs of Qujing No.1 Middle School, one can feel the strong atmosphere of the college entrance examination. More than half a month later, the results of the college entrance examination were announced, and the top scorers in the province's humanities and sciences were all from Qujing No.1 Middle School. Everyone was very happy. Take a walk around the school and see the good news at the school gate. There are photos of two top scorers and a group photo with the homeroom teacher. Later, both of the top scorers were admitted to my alma mater, Peking University. I invited two alumni, their homeroom teacher, and Principal Li of No.1 Middle School to have a meal. That night, I was very excited and said a lot.
The college entrance examination provides generation after generation of young people with opportunities to seek knowledge, develop and change their lives, and also accompanies and witnesses the historical process of our country's rise and national rejuvenation. For a long time, there has been constant criticism and criticism of the college entrance examination, and various reform plans are also brewing. However, I believe that the competition rules, awareness, and environment created by the college entrance examination, especially the opportunities provided for ordinary children to change their destiny, and the vitality and energy created for social mobility and progress, are still irreplaceable in the present.
Qujing is a major education city in Yunnan Province, with a tradition of valuing education. The total number of students in primary and secondary schools even exceeds that of the provincial capital Kunming, ranking first in the province. Qujing No.1 Middle School, No.2 Middle School, and Ethnic Middle School are all famous schools, and the education in counties and cities such as Huize and Xuanwei also has a good foundation. The fall of the top scorer in the provincial college entrance examination in Qujing is not accidental luck, or the blessing of the "Treasure of Town and School" Xiaocuan Stele on the campus of No.1 Middle School. It embodies the unimaginable struggle, hard work, and sweat of teachers and students.
