On June 20th local time, French Foreign Minister Cologne stated during his visit to South Africa that French President Macron hopes to participate in the 15th BRICS Leaders Meeting to be held in South Africa in August.
According to Radio France International, Cologne told the media at the end of her official visit to South Africa on the 20th that she had already told the South African side, "The French President can attend the meeting and is interested in continuing the dialogue between France and the BRICS countries."
Cologner also stated that Macron's decision to attend the summit "must be made by France, not the BRICS countries, and of course, the invitation must first be made by South Africa, as South Africa is the host of the summit."
French media reported on the 12th that Macron had expressed his willingness to attend the meeting to South African President Ramaphosa. The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Macron's intention on the 20th.
According to a report in the French newspaper "The Speech" on the 12th, French President Macron had a phone call with South African President Ramaphosa, the rotating chair of the BRICS countries, earlier this month, proposing France's idea of participating in this year's BRICS summit. African media reported that Ramaphosa was "quite surprised" by the request, and if Macron participates, he will become the first leader among the G7 countries to attend the BRICS summit. In addition, Macron recently made statements opposing NATO's opening of an office in Tokyo, which has attracted some public attention.
