Macau: will strengthen the inspection of items carried by inbound passengers taking flights from Japan
Japan announced that it will discharge nuclear contaminated water into the sea in the near future. In order to ensure food safety and residents' health, the Macao Special Administrative Region Gazette published Executive Order No. 134/2023 on August 23, prohibiting the import of fresh food, animal derived food, sea salt, and seaweed from 10 prefectures including Fukushima Prefecture, Chiba Prefecture, Tochigi Prefecture, Ibaraki Prefecture, Gunma Prefecture, Miyagi Prefecture, Niigata Prefecture, Nagano Prefecture, Saitama Prefecture, and Tokyo from August 24, 2023.
On the same day, Macau Customs stated that they will strictly implement the instructions of the Chief Executive and comprehensively strengthen the inspection of goods imported into Macau and people entering various ports. Among them, especially for items carried by people who take flights from Japan to Macau, we will increase the inspection efforts to prevent food from entering Macau and maintain the health of residents.
In addition, Macau Customs and Municipal Administration will continue to closely cooperate, strengthen inspections, crack down on shops or restaurants that collect, sell, and use prohibited imported ingredients, and ensure food safety in Macau. The Macau Customs also calls on residents traveling to Japan to be careful not to bring the prohibited imported products back to Macau.
