Looking at the Yangtze River | Jiangxi: Guarding the Number of "Smiling Angels" | Porpoise | Yangtze River
The finless porpoise is the flagship species of aquatic organisms in the Yangtze River, known as the "smiling angel" due to its cute appearance and slightly curved mouth. Due to factors such as overfishing and illegal pollution discharge, dense nets, polluted water, and decreasing numbers of fish have seriously threatened the survival of finless porpoises.
Starting from January 1, 2021, key water areas such as "one river, two lakes, and seven rivers" in the Yangtze River Basin, including Poyang Lake, will be subject to a 10-year fishing ban.
In order to protect the finless porpoise and other aquatic organisms, Jiangxi organized the establishment of patrol teams for retired fishermen, and the former fishermen changed from "fishermen" to "fish protectors".

With the improvement of living environment, the number of Yangtze finless porpoises has significantly increased. According to the 2022 Yangtze River finless porpoise scientific survey, the population of Yangtze River finless porpoises is 1249, an increase of 23.42% in 5 years, of which about 492 are in Poyang Lake.
