This BRICS summit is really going to get bigger.
Very large, unprecedentedly large.
This time, the host country is South Africa, and the summit will be held in Johannesburg from August 22nd to 24th. According to South Africa, all African heads of state have been invited to attend the summit this time.
You're not mistaken, leaders of all African countries.
To sum up, this year marks the 15th BRICS Summit, with the theme of "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development, and Inclusive Multilateralism". South African President Ramaphosa has made a decision and invited all African leaders to come.
There are a total of 55 countries in Africa, and there is no doubt that this will be an unprecedented event in the history of the BRICS.
With so many leaders from African countries gathered together, what the seven Western countries cannot do, what the United Nations General Assembly cannot do, the BRICS countries may have truly achieved.
What is even more gratifying is not the number of African leaders attending this summit, but the number of countries eagerly hoping to join the BRICS.
A few months ago, South Africa revealed that at least 19 countries were queuing up to apply to join the BRICS.
The original words of South African officials at the time were: "Thirteen countries have officially requested to join, and six countries have informally requested to join. We receive applications to join every day."
Please note: Every day!
It feels a bit exaggerated. But that was a few months ago, and now?
The latest statement from South Africa's BRICS envoy, Sukar, is: "There are 25 to 30 countries that have informally expressed a strong desire to become members of the BRICS family."
It's not 19 anymore, but 20-30.
Why is it so positive?
Because more and more countries are seeing hope in the BRICS countries, it feels like they have finally found an organization.
Sukrar candidly stated that the continuous marginalization has caused widespread frustration among developing countries, prompting them to turn to the BRICS group as they are striving to create a multipolar and more inclusive world.
He emphasized, "We are no longer weak and powerless, and developing countries are exercising their rights to have equal say in determining the future direction of this emerging multipolar world."
This world is folded.
Although summit meetings in Western countries sometimes invite leaders from African countries, they are more of a gesture and an embellishment that does not solve the practical problems of developing countries and sometimes makes them feel more humiliated.
The BRICS is different. All five countries are emerging countries that have always stood on the side of the developing world and actively fought for the rights and interests of developing countries.
Even in India, Indian Foreign Minister Su Jiesheng recently lamented, "The BRICS countries are no longer a 'substitute', but an established feature on the global stage. The reform significance represented by the BRICS countries is bound to spread throughout the world of multilateralism."
He also said, "BRICS countries not only mean multipolarity, but also multiple and diverse approaches to addressing international challenges."
Many developing countries have seen hope for national development, especially from China and other countries.
China used to be very poor and bullied by the West, but now that China has stood up and become rich, why can't other countries achieve what China can?
Of course, when it comes to the Johannesburg Summit, I always feel that there are still three suspense.
The first suspense is which country or countries will become the new BRICS.
So far, the BRICS has only expanded once, which was in 2010 when South Africa joined and the four BRICS countries became the five BRICS countries. For 13 years, there have been no new members added; And outside, so many countries are eager to join.
Who would be the lucky one?
The second suspense, will Macron be invited to join?
Macron has made it clear that he hopes to be invited to participate. If successful, Macron will be the first Western leader to be invited to attend the BRICS summit.
Russia has expressed opposition, believing that it is "inappropriate" for leaders of unfriendly countries to attend the BRICS summit.
But the final decision will be made by the host, Ramaphosa.
I personally believe that inviting Macron is not a bad thing. At least it demonstrates the influence of the BRICS countries, and the independence demonstrated by Macron is not a bad thing for the evolution of the current world situation.
The third suspense, what will happen to India this time?
India is also an important member of the BRICS, but sometimes India's small emotions and inner turmoil can indeed cause headaches.
The epidemic has long passed, but India recently hosted a video conference at the SCO summit, which surprised the world.
This time in South Africa, in front of so many countries, India won't be making any more fuss.
But obviously, South Africa is not India, and Africa is not South Asia either.
This time, South Africa became the host country, and all leaders of the BRICS countries were dressed up to attend, and all African leaders were invited to participate. This fully demonstrates the unique charm of the BRICS in Africa, as well as South Africa's appeal in Africa and President Ramaphosa's extraordinary organizational strength.
Without Western countries, we, the BRICS and African countries, are enjoying themselves harmoniously.
Some netizens have started planning: South Africa, if you roll like this, what will you do for other BRICS countries in the future?
If Brazil becomes the host country, then President Lula, do you have to invite all the leaders of Latin American countries?
When China becomes the host country, all Asian countries are considered, but should we invite all good friends and brothers from Asia?
Don't forget, the BRICS will continue to expand, and the newly added BRICS countries will definitely be the big players in emerging countries. His social circle, also known as the BRICS social circle.
Making more friends and fewer enemies is the wisdom of China and the wisdom of the BRICS.
The influence of the BRICS will definitely continue to grow. As long as developing countries unite, it can truly shake the world's pattern and change the face of the world.
But the key is to unite internally and compete economically. Don't think this is all fantasy. The rise of the BRICS countries should exceed our imagination.
