According to TASS on June 19th, Alexei Polisik, Director of the Second Department of the CIS State Affairs Department of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in an interview with TASS that Moscow has issued a warning to any attempt to destabilize the situation along the Dniester River, and provocation against the Russian military stationed there will be seen as an attack on Russia.
"We warn against any attempt to destabilize the situation along the Dniester River. Russian soldiers are legally present in the region as part of joint peacekeeping forces and Russian military special forces," Polishyuk emphasized. "Any action that threatens their safety will be considered an attack on the Russian Federation in accordance with international law."
Polisik said that the Russian armed forces will respond accordingly to any provocation against Russian soldiers, ensuring the safety of Russians, Russian peacekeeping soldiers, and the Korbasna arsenal.
According to reports, Ukrainian President Zelensky previously stated that if Russian peacekeeping personnel want to survive, he suggested they leave. Polisiuk commented on this, "This is another manifestation of the Kiev regime's aggressive policy, and its threat has crossed the borders of neighboring countries."
The Dniester River flows through the eastern part of Moldova, but the Slavs on the left bank of the Dniester River established the unrecognized Dniester Coastal Republic in 1990. In early 1992, there was a military conflict between the Moroccan government army and the armed forces of the separatist authorities, and Russian troops intervened in the conflict. At the OSCE Summit held in Istanbul, Türkiye, in 1999, Russia promised to withdraw its troops from the left bank of the Dniester River.
According to reports, Russian soldiers are guarding the arsenal near the village of Korbasna, which contains over 20000 tons of ammunition transported by Soviet troops after withdrawing from Europe. The Russian military task force consists of approximately 1000 personnel, who also provide support to Russian peacekeeping personnel located in the safe isolation zone along the Dniester River.
The report points out that the local Russian soldiers are currently in a state of blockade because Ukraine has blocked supply lines passing through its territory, and Moldova has also intervened to prevent them. Moldova insists on Russia withdrawing its special forces.
