"China is one of the fastest-growing economies in Asia... We are very optimistic about the prospects of China's economic recovery!" said Hesse Gates, Secretary General of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, in an interview with Xinhua News Agency during the 8th OPEC International Symposium.
Gais, as the head of the Beijing office of Kuwait Oil Company, lived in China for 3 and a half years. This experience made him feel that the Chinese economy is so dynamic.
Gais said that China's expected GDP growth target for 2023 is around 5%, ranking among the top global economies.

The monthly oil market report released by OPEC in June believes that China's economic performance this year will be better than expected. The organization has raised its forecast for the growth rate of China's oil demand in 2023 from an average of 800000 barrels per day in the May report to an average of 840000 barrels per day.

Gais said that OPEC expects global oil demand to grow at an average of 2.3 million barrels per day this year, and China will be an important supporting factor for demand growth. Since China optimized and adjusted its epidemic prevention policies, the prospect of economic recovery is promising and will become a driving force for the growth of oil demand.
In May this year, Gais attended the 6th China OPEC High Level Dialogue held in Beijing and discussed with officials from the National Energy Administration of China on deepening cooperation in areas such as energy security, energy transformation, technological cooperation, and maintaining stability in the oil market. Gais said that this meeting has yielded fruitful results, and OPEC and China have maintained close cooperation in the energy field for a long time. He looks forward to further deepening the cooperation between the two sides.
The 8th OPEC International Symposium, which opened in Vienna, the capital of Austria on the 5th, focused on achieving sustainable and inclusive energy transformation, attracting officials from major oil producing and consuming countries, representatives from international organizations and energy companies, and industry experts and scholars to attend.
Gais told reporters that OPEC member states support energy transformation and he looks forward to deepening technical cooperation between OPEC and China in the field of green energy transformation. "The energy transformation should be aimed at continuously expanding the total energy output while reducing carbon emissions. In this regard, Chinese technology can play an important role. We have started discussing extensive cooperation with Chinese technology suppliers."
