International Sharp Review | The US Plays Two Hands, Does Not Work Against China's Strategy | Against China | International
Recently, the United States has once again appeared conflicted in its relationship with China: on the one hand, US Secretary of Defense Austin challenged China at the 20th Shangri La Dialogue, mentioning the Taiwan Strait issue and so-called "freedom of navigation"; At the same time, the US military hyped up warships passing through the Taiwan Strait and even claimed to have been "dangerously intercepted" by the Chinese side. On the other hand, Assistant Secretary of State Conda, who is responsible for foreign affairs in East Asia and the Pacific, visited China on the 4th to seek contact with China.
The routine of engaging in containment and confrontation while engaging in dialogue and cooperation is not unfamiliar to people. In its relations with China, the uncomfortable contrast of the US behavior is actually the norm of its foreign strategy. Some analysts believe that a superpower like the United States, which is accustomed to dominating the international community, does not truly have a general concept of diplomacy.
From a practical perspective, the contradictory behavior of the US reflects Washington's distorted political ecology. Against the backdrop of the United States mistakenly positioning China as its "biggest strategic competitor", the so-called "being strong against China" has become Washington's political correctness. Almost no political figure dares to take responsibility for easing relations with China. They mostly put on a show of contact with China while trying to make China accept the rules of the United States game. At this session of the Shangri La Dialogue, the US continued to hype up the so-called "China threat", indicating that its hegemonic rules have not changed and its approach of using China US relations as a political bargaining chip has not changed.
However, the current strength of the United States does not match this posture. The current domestic economic situation in the United States is full of crises, and the two parties have struggled to resolve the debt crisis through bargaining, but have not fundamentally solved the problem. Bloomberg and other media reported that recent US Treasury officials have raised concerns to China, emphasizing the importance of close communication between the two largest economies, the US and China, on global macroeconomic and financial issues and jointly addressing global challenges. Analysts point out that an important demand for the US to visit China is to carry out crisis management with US bonds as the core. In addition, the United States also needs to cooperate with China on issues such as climate change, nuclear proliferation, and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Talk if you want, fight if you want?Foreign military aircraft and ships should not wander around China's territory and territorial waters, and should consciously abide by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Imagine one day, if another country's warship or aircraft were cruising along the west or east coast of the United States, how would Washington feel? Would you still consider this to be reasonable?
People remember that during the 2020 election, current US leaders repeatedly emphasized that "governing experience" was one of the most significant advantages. More than two years have passed, and whether it is proposing the so-called "three part rule" strategy towards China or claiming to set up "barriers" for Sino US relations, the US's governing experience seems to be more reflected in creating fancy rhetoric. The actual pursuit is the right to unilaterally act recklessly in Sino US relations, which is an unfair relationship where the US is responsible for causing trouble and China cannot fight back. But is this possible? Can more than 1.4 billion Chinese people agree?
People can see very clearly that the fundamental reason for the current predicament in China US relations is that the US has made mistakes in its strategic understanding of China. Whoever makes a mistake is responsible for correcting it. The US should not expect China to cooperate in areas where the US has needs, while ignoring or even harming China's interests. The fact has proven that when dealing with China, the US cannot do whatever it wants. It should learn twelve words: mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation.
